What's new on Netflix UK for September 2020

August was a relatively quiet month for all the streaming services in terms of standout original content being released, so can Netflix shake September up a bit?

The warm, sunny weather may continue for a few more weeks but there’s a general feeling that sliding into September signifies the start of autumn - certainly from a meteorological standpoint, So to keep spirits up as we turn the corner towards the latter half of 2020, we’ll take a look at what Netflix might have on offer now that the slim window for back garden BBQs and staycations is closing.

Netflix has a range of original content ready to go for this month including a couple of high profile Netflix Original movies in the form of I’m Thinking of Ending Things from the always left field Charlie Kaufman and The Devil All the Time, which again shows the streaming service’s ability to attract big name stars to its projects. In this case, Tom Holland and Robert Pattison have taken time off from being superheroes to star in the rural noir drama. Meanwhile, although Enola Holmes with Stranger Things' Millie Bobbie Brown playing Sherlock Holmes’s younger sister, is looking like a promising romp.

There’s also an Original series chronicling the early life of one of cinemas most well recognised female villains - Nurse Ratched from classic book/play/film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Given the kind of antagonist the character turns into, it’s unlikely to be big on laughs, so to lighten the mood Netflix has conjured up animated action in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and French comedy series, Family Business.

Let’s get under September’s hood, bearing in mind the ever present proviso that although we’ve tried to be as UK specific as possible, start dates can change, content can sometimes be territory specific and shows can even get yanked by Netflix themselves.

Pick of the Shows

Netflix has described the series “a thrilling, emotional drama on an epic scale that celebrates the incredible advancements humans can achieve and the personal sacrifices they must make along the way.” So, StarTrek without the phasers then?

Trailer below is NSFW.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (S1 Netflix Original Animated Series)

Unable to reach the outside world, they’ll need to go from strangers to friends to family if they’re going to survive.

Animated adventure that takes place during the disastrous Indominus Rex incident at Jurassic World.

Ratched (S1, Netflix Original Series)

In 1947, Mildred Ratched arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it. In fact, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smouldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.

After Hollywood back in May, Ryan Murphy returns to Netflix with Ratched in which Sarah Paulson stars as the infamous Nurse Ratched in a prequel series to Ken Kesey’s celebrated rage against the machine, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Murphy had to secure the rights to the character from Michael Douglas who jointly owned the screen rights to the Cuckoo's Nest material with the Saul Zaentz estate. After that, the project became the subject of a bidding war which also involved Apple and Hulu. Netflix eventually won out and secured a two season order.

Expect plenty of stylised nightmarish images in the vein of Murphy’s American Horror Story.

Pick of the Movies

1st September

Demolition Man (1993, Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock)

Detective John Spartan’s relentless and reckless pursuit of arch criminal Simon Phoenix ends in disaster and leads to him being cryogenically frozen as punishment. 36 years later, Phoenix is once again on the loose, only this time in a society that no longer experiences crime. With a police force woefully under equipped to deal with this reign of terror, there’s only one thing the authorities can do now - fight fire with fire and thaw out the old school cop Spartan, The Demolition Man.

Possibly the last film Wesley Snipes smiled in, he has an absolute blast here showing off his martial arts skills and chewing scenery (and extras), and it was this, rather than Speed, that really announced Sandra Bullock’s appealingly innocent but plucky screen persona to the movie world. Lucky for Bullock then that the originally cast Lori Petty was fired after two days, with Petty admitting later that she and Stallone just did not get on.

The movie works well as both a thrilling action ride and a humorous fish out of water comedy. However, with some allusions to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, there are some comments about how the lower socioeconomic groups are treated as an invisible underclass and persistent nuisance by the seemingly benevolent but restrictive authorities. The mix of action, satire and comedy largely works and, overall, there’s enormous fun to be had in the Stallone-Snipes macho-offs.

2nd September

Freaks - You’re One of Us (2020, Netflix Original Film, Drama, Sci-Fi. International: Germany)

Wendy, a single mum who works as a fry cook realises, after meeting a mysterious tramp, that years of medication have suppressed her latent supernatural powers. She finds others like her but uncovers a vast conspiracy that endangers them all.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020, Netflix Original Film, Drama, Horror, Mystery. Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collettte, David Thewlis, Dir. Charlie Kaufman)

Despite second thoughts about their relationship, a young woman takes a road trip with her new boyfriend, Jake, to his family farm. Trapped at the secluded farm during a snowstorm with Jake’s mother and father, the woman begins to question the nature of everything she knew or understood about her boyfriend, herself, and the world.

Based on Iain Reid’s acclaimed 2016 debut novel, I’m Thinking of Ending Things is an exploration of regret, longing and the fragility of the human spirit - sounds right up director Charlie (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) Kaufman’s street.

Brie Larson was originally cast in the role that Jessie Buckley ended up stepping into.

Deadpool - added 24-Aug-2020 (2016, Action, Adventure, Comedy. Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skein, Dir. Tim Millar)

Wade Wilson,, a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary agrees to a rogue experiment to help him beat the cancer that is destroying his body. However, the process involves days of toture and abuse and is designed to turn him into a slave. So when his latent mutant healing gene is finally activated, leaving him virtually invulnerable but horribly scarred, he escapes and adopts a new personna - the wise cracking but deadly merc with the mouth - Deadpool. And he’s after some payback.

After years of being mired in rights and development complications, the leak of some concept footage kicked the process into high gear leading to this fairly faithful, ultra violent and self deprecating R rated take on Marvel’s fourth-wall breaking fan favourite. Even though Kick Ass (below) go there first, it was Deadpool's critical and box office success that really persuaded studios to take a chance on more adult superhero style movies leading to Logan, Joker and its own sequel.

Quite what the outcome of Deadpool now being a Disney property will be remains to be seen as plans for a third movie movie forward, but the House of Mouse seems happy for Netflix to have this first outing for the time being.

The Devil All the Time (2020, Netflix Original Film, Crime, Drama, Thriller. Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Riley Keough, Haley Bennett)

In postwar rural Knockemstiff, Ohio and its neighbouring backwoods, sinister characters - an unholy preacher, a twisted couple and a crooked sheriff - converge around young Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) as he fights the corruption and brutality that threaten him and his family.

This marks producer Jake Gyllenhaal’s second movie project with Netflix after Velvet Buzzsaw and is based on Donald Ray Pollock’s 2011 novel. Spanning the decades between World War II and the Vietnam war, The Devil All The Time is a multi-generational tale that explores PTSD, violence and faith and features an all star cast which also includes Jason Clarke, Bill Skarsgård and Sebastian Stan, who was personally recommended by Chris Evans who had to pass due to scheduling issues. Nice that Cap thought of Bucky really.

23rd September

Enola Holmes (2020, Netflix Original Film, Drama, Mystery. Millie Bobbie Brown, Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, Helen Bonham Carter)

When Enola Holmes, Sherlock's teen sister, discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord.

Not part of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s canon, Enola Holmes was introduced as a character in a series of stories by Nancy Springer.

Meanwhile, the project has been the centre of a legal wrangle with Conan Doyle’s estate which claims the more humanised and emotionally intelligent Sherlock Holmes - as featured in Enola Holmes and played by Henry Cavill - and which only appeared in later tales, is still under copyright by the estate and not yet in the public domain.

1st September

A Beautiful Mind (2001, True life, Drama. Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany. Dir. Ron Howard, Scr. Akiva Goldsmith)

A brilliant but asocial mathematician struggles with his mental health but is on the brink of international acclaim when he becomes entangled in a mysterious conspiracy. Now only his devoted wife can help him in this powerful story of courage, passion and triumph.

Based on the book of the same name about troubled American mathematician John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics and Abel Prize winner, A Beautiful Mind was a Box Office success and awards magnet, walking away with four of its eight Oscar nominations. Despite its plaudits, it faced criticism from Nash’s family about several significant inaccuracies depicted in the film. In response to the accusations the filmmakers said they never intended a literal representation of his life and said they made narrative choices for the dramatic drive of the movie.

Blow - Added 24-Aug-2020:  (2001, True life, Crime, Drama. Johnny Depp,  Penélope Cruz, Franka Potente, Dir. Ted Demme)

Underrated dramatisation about how smuggler George Jung, along with the Medellín Cartel headed by Pablo Escobar, established the American cocaine market in the 1970s.

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory - Added 24-Aug-2020: (2005, Adventure, Comedy, Family. Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, David Kelly, Dir. Tim Burton)

A young boy wins a tour through the most magnificent chocolate factory in the world, led by the world's most unusual candy maker.

Tim Burton would seem to be the ideal choice to take on Roald Dahl’s classic children's tale with dark and kooky being his calling card. However, what you think of this is likely to be heavily tempered by how well you tolerate Depp’s man child interpretation of Willy Wonka who here is given a back story not found in the book.

Curse of Chucky (2013, Horror, Thriller. Chantal Quesnelle, Fiona Dourif)

After her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to recent bloodshed and chaos.

This sixth installment of the Child’s Play horror franchise returned as a direct to video chapter after a hiatus of nine years and dropped a lot of the campy humour introduced in the latter films.

Dinner for Schmucks (2010, Comedy. Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, Dir. Jay Roach)

When he finds out that his work superiors host a dinner celebrating the idiocy of their guests, a rising executive questions it when he's invited and promises his girlfriend he won’t attend, just as he befriends a man who would be the perfect guest.

Inspired by a French film Le Dîner de Cons, it marked another pairing of Paul Rudd and Steve Carrell who had previously world together in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and The Forty Year Old Virgin. Plus, it’s the film to watch if you want your fix of mouse-based dioramas.

Inept but well meaning Canadian mountie Dudley Do-Right, has to stop old rival, Snidely Whiplash, who has come up with a plot to buy all the property in town, then start a phony gold rush by seeding the river with nuggets.

After the slapstick antics of George of The Jungle, Brendan Fraser returned to another Jay Ward cartoon property, though this live action version of Dudley Do-Right was generally less well received than the Tarzan baiting George.

Indecent Proposal Added 24-Aug-2020: (1993, Drama, Romance. Robert Redford, Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Dir. Adrian Lyne)

A billionaire offers one million dollars to a young married couple for one night with the wife. The couple need the money but the deal puts their relationship into turmoil.

A decent hit back in the day, it came with a certain amount of ‘what would you do?’ water cooler controversy that will only be amplified by the proposed (ahem) remake and more modern #MeToo awareness.

The Sum of All Fears (2002, Action, Drama, Thriller. Ben Affleck, Morgan Freeman, James Cromwell. Dir.  Phil Alden Robinson)

CIA analyst Jack Ryan must thwart the plans of a terrorist faction that threatens to induce a catastrophic conflict between the United States and Russia's newly elected president by detonating a nuclear weapon at a football game in Baltimore.

Ben Affleck’s single movie tenure as the resourceful and resilient Jack Ryan was effectively a reboot to a younger version of the character after Harrison Ford’s successful one-two punch of Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger and was given Ford’s blessing since he had already dropped out of the project. Released in May 2002, it was the first film released since 9/11 to deal so vividly with terrorism on US soil and was certainly faced with some criticism from those who thought not enough time had elapsed.

True: Friendship Day (2020, Netflix Original Animation, Family)

When a giant Grippity-Grab snags Grizelda’s friendship bracelet and turns her into a mermaid, True heads under the sea armed with magic wishes to save the day… it says here.

Watchmen - Added 24-Aug-2020: (2009, Action, Drama, Fantasy. Patrick Wilson, Matthew Goode, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Billy Crudup Dir. Zack Snyder)

In an alternate 1985 where masked superheroes exist but have been outlawed, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach into his own investigation, uncovering something that could completely change the course of history.

Upon release, Watchmen provided dour counter programming to the more colourful nascent MCU and delivered a dark, multithreaded mystery punctuated by some terrific imagery courtesy of panels straight from the classic (but let’s be honest, a bit dull) graphic novel.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory - Added 24-Aug-2020: (1971, Family, Fantasy, Musical. Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, Peter Ostrum)

No need to repeat the plot synopsis attached to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory above but this original adaptation of Dahl’s book found no favour with the author himself whose screenplay was reportedly re-written. Dahl was also angered by major changes to the ending and the addition of musical numbers and disowned the film. Before Gene Wilder was cast as Wonka, producers considered Fred Astaire, Joel Grey, Ron Moody, and Jon Pertwee. Peter Sellers reportedly begged Dahl for the role but Spike Milligan was the writer’s original choice. Wonka’s famous limping / summersalting entrance was Wilder’s idea.

Zodiac (2007, Crime, Drama, Mystery.  Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Dir. David Fincher)

In the late 1960s and 1970s, fear grips the city of San Francisco as a serial killer called Zodiac stalks its residents. Investigators (Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards) and reporters (Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr.) become obsessed with learning the killer's identity and bringing him to justice. Meanwhile, Zodiac claims victim after victim and taunts the authorities with cryptic messages, cyphers and menacing phone calls.

Based on the true story of the notorious serial killer and the intense manhunt he inspired, director David Fincher used Alan J Pakula’s All The President’s Men as the investigative template and spent months researching the original police reports and interviewing witnesses, family members of suspects, retired and current investigators and two surviving victims - both of whom are credited as consultants on the film. In order to get everyone on board, Fincher had to convince them he was going down a different path to Dirty Harry (1971) which had taken the Zodiac killer as its inspiration.

Zoolander - Added 24-Aug-2020: (2001, Comedy. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson. Dir. Ben Stiller)

When top male model Derek Zoolander loses out on a prestigious award to rival Hansel, his world collapses and he experiences a fall from grace. In his desperation, he turns to sinister fashion guru Mugatu who takes Zoolander under his wing in preparation for his evil plans.

Take Me Home Tonight (2011, Comedy Drama, Romance. Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler

Originally a project with Clint Eastwood attached to direct, First Man continues Hollywood’s mining of the NASA space programme’s dogged and inspirational journey off the planet and joins the likes of The Right Stuff, Apollo 13 and Hidden Figures as a salute to the determination, selflessness and downright genius at play by so many individuals.

The first project out of the gates of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg’s Stolen Picture production company, Slaughterhouse Rulez failed to make any impact at the box office but could find a new lease of life on streaming services.

Kick Ass - added 24th August: (2010, Action, Comedy, Crime. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloe Grace-Moretz, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dir. Matthew Vaughn, Scr. Jane Goldman, Matthew Vaughn)

Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become the superhero, Kick Ass, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so - how hard can it be? Along the way he tangles with other wannabe vigilantes Big Daddy and Hit Girl and finds himself drawn into a far more dangerous world than he had reckoned with.

Violent, crude and funny, this is probably the ultimate Marmite comic book movie given the nihilistic levels of profanity and lethality on offer from the eleven year old Hit Girl.
