Bang & Olufsen update Beoplay A9 with Google Assistant

More bang for your buck

by Andy Bassett
Never one to shy away from an eye-catching design (and eye-watering price), Danish lifestyle audio company Bang & Olufsen has given its Beoplay A9 a refresh and introduced a handful of new features.
Chief among those additions is the inclusion of Google Assistant, meaning the speaker can be controlled using voice commands to alter volume or change the music, as well as help plan the day’s events. It will also interface with other Google compatible smart home products.

Should you rather be more hands-on when it comes to controlling your speaker, as before, the volume can be controlled by swiping a hand across the top, tracks can be skipped with taps and resting a hand on the top sensor will mute playback.

The speaker now also sports an two additional, 38mm full range drivers to increase the soundscape and perceived separation. These join the existing 203mm woofer, 2x 76mm midrange drivers and 2x 19mm tweeters.

Bang & Olufsen have added onboard active room compensation which adjusts the sound signature based on the speaker’s surroundings. This takes away some of the worries about where to place the A9 if options are limited since the room compensation feature will endeavour to create the best sound no matter the location.

Finally, a new streaming engine has been built-in to enable faster connection to the available streaming services which include TuneIn, Chromecast, AirPlay 2 and Deezer which are supported by Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

First released in 2012, the iconic, circular A9 can be hung from a wall or used as a freestanding unit. Designed as a multi-room system, listeners can play a single song throughout every room in the house or stream a different song to each speaker.

The latest version will be available in four iterations including white with oak legs, black with black walnut legs and special-edition bronze or brass tones. Continuing the lifestyle element of the speaker, it can be customised with a range of different wooden legs and textile covers designed by Danish designers, Kvadrat.

Available at B&O stockists and online from 14th May with an SRP of £2,225 (approx $2,950 USD)
