CES 2020 News: Samsung Q950TS bezel-less 8K TV unveiled

Recently granted trademarks find home in new TV

Samsung has officially unveiled its bezel-less 8K TV called the Q950TS just ahead of the official opening of CES 2020.

Sporting what the company is calling its Infinity design, the TV all but eliminates the screen bezel on three sides leaving a minimal edge along the bottom for the Samsung logo. The accompanying press release claims the 99 percent image size provides outstanding immersion along with its elegant design.

Despite housing a full array local dimming LED backlight, the panel is a mere 15mm thick and has a completely flat back thus delivering an unusually thin QLED TV.

The world’s biggest TV manufacturer has packed in a raft of new features to enhance the image, audio and user experience.

The Q950TS is equipped with an AI quantum processor that utilises ‘deep learning’ running on a neural network model and generates its own algorithms from a database of picture information, enabling optimal upscaling of any image.

A new ‘Adaptive Picture’ feature detects and recognises the environmental conditions the TV is in - presumably via a light sensor - and automatically provides optimized brightness and contrast in any viewing scenario meaning views are free to leave curtains open or lights on.

Samsung’s recently announced AI ScaleNet technology reduces original data loss during video streaming and Amazon has partnered with the company to apply this technology to its Prime Video app, which could be an indication that Amazon is preparing to support 8K more generally.

The Q950TS will also support YouTube’s 8K AV1 codec, which is something that Samsung’s 2019 8K TVs did not do. This is significant since, apart from a few broadcasters trialling 8K for showcase events such as the 2020 Olympics and the upcoming next-generation games consoles from Sony and Microsoft, YouTube is one of the few suppliers of 8K content.

Improved audio is also present in the Q950TS and Object Tracking Sound Plus (OTS+) is a function that ‘recognises moving objects in video and moves the sound along the speakers mounted on the TV’, effectively delivering a 5.1 surround effect and adding to the immersion, so claims the press release.

Samsung has also introduced its recently trademarked ‘Q-Symphony’ technology which enables the TVs speakers to be used in conjunction with compatible soundbars to create up to a 9.1.4 channel sound system - an approach that has earned a CES's Best Innovation Award.

In addition, the Active Voice Amplifier (AVA) feature enables the TV to detect ambient noise and relatively adjust the sound volume so on-screen dialogue is not missed in noisy conditions.

The user interface has been improved too with a revamped ‘Universal Guide’ to make choosing your content easier and a ‘multi view’ option means that two content choices can be viewed either Side by Side or as Picture in Picture.

Screen mirroring of mobile phone content is now even easier with a feature called ‘Tap View’ which requires just a quick touch of the TV with a viewer’s smartphone and the ‘Digital Butler’ supposedly allows the TV to recognize and control not only devices connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth but also older devices not connected to the Internet, though Samsung did not go into details about how this works.

Samsung has also added Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant to its own Bixby voice assistant to expand the choice available to viewers.

Choo Jong-seok, vice president of Samsung Electronics' video display business division, said, “2020 QLED 8K has Samsung's willingness to innovate to provide more advanced screen experiences to consumers. We will expand the market by delivering it.”

The announcement of the Q950TS also partially confirms that the company’s 2020 QLED model range will have ‘T’ as part of their naming convention.
