Huawei launches Vision X65 OLED TV in China

Flagship status sees Chinese OLED TV square off against established competition on home turf

by Andy Bassett

The rise of Chinese smartphone-manufacturers-turned-TV-makers continues as Huawei debuts its first OLED TV -  the Vision X65, a 65-inch model containing 14 speakers.

Having released its Vision 4K TV last year, Huawei is now taking a leap over domestic competitors such as OnePlus, Xiaomi and even some overseas smartphone companies such as Nokia (all of whom have released LCD 4K TVs in the last 6 months), and has sought to take on some of the largest TV manufacturers in the world with its very first OLED TV, the Vision X65.

Aiming straight for flagship status, the 65-inch 4K screen delivers a 120Hz refresh rate, supports HDR10 as well as reproducing 98% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut range and promises up to 1000nits brightness. The Vision X65 also boasts TUV Rheinland certification for eye comfort, the first display of this size to attain the award.

Additionally, it contains Hiliscon’s latest quad-core SoC, the Honghu 898, which has been specifically optimised for OLED screens and can use onboard sensors and advanced algorithms to switch the screen’s refresh rate plus adjust the brightness of the display depending upon the ambient lighting conditions.

The Honghu 898 is coupled with 6GB of RAM for multitasking and 128GB of storage for all your apps and media and runs on Huawei’s own Harmony HongmengOS.

Huawei has not ignored the audio experience and the X65 packs a 75W sound system inside its 25mm thick anodized aluminum alloy chassis. This consists of 14 speakers arranged as six tweeters, six full range drivers and two woofers in a front firing setup. The TV can detect the spatial structure of the room and optimise the immersive audio field to best suit the environment.

The Vision X65 features a 24MP wide-angle pop-up camera which features a Hi3559C chip. This utilises dual NPUs (Neural Processing Units) to leverage AI based computing to monitor and understand gestures for ‘Air Control’ of the TV along with support for 1080p video calls at 30fps.

The Vision X65 OLED TV costs CNY24,999 (approximately $3,500) and will only be available in China to begin with. Huawei is now taking pre orders with shipping due to commence on 26th April. A re-launch in other global markets may be on the cards at a more suitable point in time.
