Gaming TV heaven?

LG Electronics has announced the availability of its long awaited 48-inch CX OLED TV in key European markets.

Now available for £1,499 from Currys PC World, the UK gets LG’s eagerly anticipated 48CX OLED TV slightly ahead of other markets such as North America and Asia, possibly as LG looks for sales to a population still experiencing a moderate pandemic lockdown and who are still looking for smaller, second TVs for family members or for kitchens and bedrooms - something this model is well suited to.

Adding to LG’s 2020 OLED models, which include 55-, 65-, 77- and 88-inch options, the smaller screen size doesn’t compromise on image quality and delivers the kind of superior 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) image which benefits from the perfect blacks and infinite contrast expected of the self illuminating technology. And at 48-inches, the 8 million plus pixels are at the kind of density approaching that of a 96-inch 8K TV, thus ensuring a sharper 4K image for games, TV and movies.

Recognising that 48*-inches will be an attractive screen size for serious gamers, LG has made sure they are well catered for with a wealth of features.

LG’s OLED TVs are the first in the industry to be NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, which ensures that the TVs refresh rate adapts to the frame rate of the connected hardware to reduce flicker, stuttering or image tearing, thus increasing the player’s sense of immersion.

Supporting advanced HDMI specifications, means that [email protected] is available for a smooth gaming experience that also benefits from auto low latency mode (ALLM), enhanced audio return channel (eARC) and variable refresh rate (VRR - enabling compatibility with a wide variety of gaming devices such as graphics cards and consoles).

Overall, the low input lag, ultra-fast response time, support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR, coupled with the inclusion of the HDR Gaming Interest Group’s (HGiG) HDR gaming profile, promises a lightning fast gaming experience accompanied by vivid graphics.

Since the believability of a new gaming world is not just about impressive graphics but audio also, the LG OLED 48CX incorporates support for Dolby Atmos and uses LG’s deep learning-based AI Acoustic Tuning to understand the acoustic environment and adjust the sound for greater accuracy. The TV is also BT Surround ready so two extra Bluetooth speakers can be connected to improve the immersion of older stereo games by up-mixing 2.0 channel sound to virtual 4.0 surround sound.

Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company, said, “LG is again pushing the innovation envelope by bringing the ultimate picture to a TV screen size that is much more approachable.” He added,  “Now even more consumers will be able to experience the superior performance of LG OLED TVs, considered to be the most advanced gaming TV on the market today.”

The company might well have intended to have its brand new OLED screen size with consumers earlier than this but production issues at LG Display’s Guangzhou manufacturing plant and the global crisis due to the coronavirus outbreak have hampered release schedules.
