LG CX and GX OLED TVs gain AMD FreeSync Premium

Tear-free gaming

LG’s latest firmware update grants FreeSync Premium compatibility for its CX and GX OLED TVs, expanding their gaming credentials.

Rolling out now across the US and Europe, LG’s latest firmware (3.10.20) delivers support for AMD’s FreeSync Premium technology, improvements to Apple AirPlay 2 and support for ATSC 3.0, the nextgen US TV standard - though this is only for GX and WX models, not CX.

LG’s 2020 OLED TVs already boast gamer-friendly features such as VRR and ALLM, and the addition of the 48-inch OLED48CX model this year was clearly an invitation to gamers everywhere to embrace OLED in their smaller studies and bedroom sized gaming havens.

Now, AMD FreeSync Premium support joins Nvidia’s G-Sync and the HDMI based VRR to provide support for the widest range of different VRR standards which are important in reducing stuttering by synchronising the refresh rate of the display with the framerate of FreeSync compatible graphics cards in the attached gaming PC.

FreeSync Premium is a new tier of FreeSync that was first introduced at CES 2020 and adds to the baseline FreeSync technology with additional benefits such as mandatory low framerate compensation (LFC) and at least 120hz refresh rate at FHD resolution. The supported frequency range for AMD FreeSync Premium in LG 2020 TVs is 40-120Hz.

It should be noted that some users are reporting that the update seemingly comes with a catch. The firmware bestows the option of support for AMD FreeSync Premium on each HDMI port separately and when a port is activated, Dolby Vision is no longer processed – even if FreeSync is not active. Dolby Vision signals will only be accepted again when FreeSync is deactivated.

A future update will grant FreeSync compatibility to LG’s BX and ZX OLEDs and this will put LG’s OLED TVs (along with its Nano91, Nano90, Nano86 and Nano85 LCD models) on a more even footing with the numerous Samsung TVs which are already compatible with FreeSync.
