LG Display next generation OLEDs showcased at SID 2020

As the world’s leading innovator, creator and manufacturer of OLED based display solutions  LG Display will be showcasing its latest OLED technologies at the 2020 Society for Information Display (SID) conference which is being held online from August 3rd - 7th.

While not specifically TV oriented, the array of next generation OLED technologies could at least give an indication of the sorts of developments which might find their way into the home entertainment sector in the coming years.

LG Display is presenting these advanced technologies on SID’s online site in two separate sections of what it calls its ‘digital showroom’.

Firstly, the ‘Unlimited Design Freedom Zone’ will be demonstrating next generation foldable and transparent products such as a 12.8-inch Rollable OLED, 13.3-inch large-size foldable OLED, 65-inch bendable OLED, and 55-inch transparent OLED with 40% transparency, which will all be showcased.

The second set of demonstrations will take place in the ‘Enhanced User Experience Zone,’ and include a 27-inch curved P-OLED for an automotive dashboard, and a Digital Cockpit composed of a 12.3-inch Cinematic Sound OLED dashboard, both suggesting where automobile display technology could be headed. In addition, there’s a demonstration of “next-generation OLED displays including AV/VR and 3D” which doesn’t really tell us a lot but sounds impressively Minority Report-like.

There will also be plenty of videos that will enable digital visitors to experience a taste of the future scenarios where OLED displays could be used to make life more exciting and user friendly. Of course there’s always a limit to how much information you can get from looking at a screen on another screen.

Dr. In-Byeong Kang, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display, said “We will lead the innovation of future displays based on differentiated technology that only OLED can realize.”

The decision to move Display Week to an online only event was taken in early May and is in line with many other AV industry bodies which have realigned their event plans to a more Covid-19 aware digital only (or partially digital) platform, including IFA 2020 and CES 2021.

Helge Seetzen, the SID president, promises the usual opportunity for technical paper presentations, engagements and opportunities for discussion with experts in the field and exciting exhibitor presentations.
