LG to unveil 4K UHD CineBeam projectors at IFA

CineBeam projecting into European homes soon.

by Andy Bassett
First revealed at CES back in Jan 2019, the HU85L CineBeam Laser UST (Ultra Short Throw) projector is now joined by the HU70L LED model and both will soon be available in Europe.
But prior to the public getting their hands on the two new 4K UHD CineBeam projectors, they will be on display at the upcoming IFA event from 6th-11th September in Berlin. This will be the first real opportunity for the European market to get a close look at the 2019 CineBeam range.

Both are DLP projectors and incorporate LG’s newest Wheel-less Laser and LED technology which helps improve image and colour accuracy over and above DLP projectors that use colour wheels. The result is that distracting visual artifacts such as the rainbow effect, clouding and colour distortion are reduced.

The HU85L uses a three-channel laser system with separate red and blue lasers plus a second blue laser. This extra laser creates the green elements of the spectrum using the Wheel-less Laser and LED system. This approach enables 97 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space and up to 12-bit colour processing for detailed and vibrant images of up to 2,700 ANSI lumens.

Using UST technology, the HU85L can project a 90-inch diagonal image from 5.6cm and up to a 120-inch image from 18cm distance from the screen.

The HU70L is lighter (3.2kg compared to the HU85L’s 12.2kg) and more compact. It utilises 4 LEDs to generate the red, green and blue colours with the green levels being dynamically adjusted via the fourth LED which boosts brightness and contrast. The HU70L covers 92 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and can create a maximum image of 140-inches measured diagonally, at up to 1500 ANSI lumens. Contrast is quoted at 150,000:1 compared to 2,000,000:1 for the HU85L.

The quoted lifespan at the highest brightness is 20,000 hours for the HU85L which improves to 30,000 hours for the HU70L due to its LED light source.

Both projectors support HDR10 for high dynamic range images and feature TruMotion technology which can be implemented for smoother, more fluid on-screen motion. Additionally, Full HD content can be upscaled to 4K using LG’s six step upscaling technology. Both CineBeam models employ LG’s highly regarded webOS 4.5 to access streaming apps such as Netflix, Amazon and YouTube and a wealth of connectivity options includes USB, HDMI, Ethernet and wireless mirroring for both Android and iOS. Both models feature built-in stereo speakers thus providing an all-in-one home cinema solution for any room with a large white wall.

Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT business division, commented, “Our new 4K projectors versatile enough to perform equally well in the home or office.” He continued, “Featuring new innovations that elevate picture quality and user convenience to a whole new level, LG is redefining the modern projector and continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

LG’s first Ultra Short Throw (UST) 4K UHD CineBeam Laser projector, the HU85L, and the LG 4K UHD CineBeam LED HU70L projector will be available in Europe starting in September. Prices and exact dates have yet to be announced.
