Linn announces Majik DSM digital streamer upgrade

Majikal makeover

by Andy Bassett

The Majik DSM digital streamer has undergone a top to bottom reimagining to deliver improvements in looks, features and performance.

Using the knowledge gained over the 10 years since the first Majik DSM was introduced, updates have been performed on the DAC implementation, power amplification and volume control which are now all underpinned by a new, higher power processing platform.

By developing the DAC architecture, based on its own industry-leading Katalyst technology, Linn has improved upsampling and provided a lower noise reference voltage and ultra-low jitter clock for greater timing accuracy throughout.

The new Majik DSM offers lower noise and distortion through its use of bespoke, Linn-designed Class D power amplifiers which offer more efficient signal conversion, plus the use of a digital volume control which removes a lossy component from the signal path.

Meanwhile, the Majik can optimise performance for an individual room and speaker setup using Linn’s unique Space Optimisation technology, ensuring the best audio experience for the environment.

Designed as a central hub for music and movie lovers, the Majik has enough connectivity to cover any analogue, digital and wireless based source. There are four HDMI 2.0 4K-compatible inputs so the Majik can be used as part of an AV based setup, and the Type-B USB port allows Hi-Res audio to be played directly from a PC thus functioning as an audiophile-quality standalone DAC.

Analogue sources are catered for with the input configurable for line level sources or Moving Magnet for turntables. The phono stage architecture is derived from Linn’s reference Urika II phono stage, which combines digital and analogue processing to precisely implement the RIAA curve for more accurate vinyl reproduction.

Wireless sources can connect either via the in-built Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, while a headphone amp designed for audiophile-grade headphones and a 6.35mm front panel output cater for late night or solo listening sessions.

Interaction and control of the new Majik DSM comes courtesy of a tactile interface which consists of six customisable smart buttons which can be assigned audio from any source, while the Menu button provides comprehensive control and feedback via a new larger and higher resolution monochromatic display.

If you prefer control from a distance (i.e you’re too comfy to get out of your favourite listening chair) then Linn provides both a remote control and dedicated apps (Linn App for iOS and Kazoo for Android) to help get the best out of your Majik.

The next generation version of the Majik DSM, Linn’s best selling streaming product of the last decade, means the all-in-one network player, preamp and power amp has undergone a transformation to enable it to continue to sit comfortably in the company’s expanding product portfolio and compete effectively with hardware from rival manufacturers, according to company Managing Director, Gilad Tiefenbrun.

The new Majik DSM comes in a black finish and is available worldwide now priced at £2,950 through Linn Specialist retailers. The previous model of Majik DSM is now no longer available to order.
