Marantz has announced its 2020 range of 8K-compatible SR-series AVR hardware including the SR5015 AV Receiver and the SR6015, SR7015 and SR8015 AV Amplifiers.
All the new 2020 SR series models have expanded capabilities so they are now ready for 8K input sources and feature the latest HDMI technologies including Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode.
In addition, there’s support across the new models for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based surround sound formats along with Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization Technology and DTS Virtual:X - these add virtual height channels which can create the sense of extra immersion without needing height channel hardware. Moving up through the models sees the addition of support for IMAX Enhanced, Auro-3D and DTS: X Pro out of the box.
The SR-Series is designed to add more power and immersion to the home theatre, music and gaming experience and starts with the 7ch SR5015 AV receiver, which features a total of 180W of power. The next in the range is the SR6015, which increases the power to 185W across 9 channels while adding 11.2 channel processing so an external stereo amplifier can be added to the system, and also adds IMAX Enhanced certification. The SR7015 matches the 6015 for channels and processing but increases the power to 200W, has a second display and adds the Auro 3D surround sound format, while the top of the range SR8015 tops off at 11 channels, with 205W of power, 13.2 channel processing and DTS:X Pro.
DTS:X Pro - to be delivered by a firmware update later in the year - and IMAX Enhanced allow listeners to enjoy up to 13 channels of decoding in speaker configurations of 7.2.6 or 9.2.4 when taking advantage of the newly adopted 13.2 channel processing capabilities with external amplification, that is offered by the SR8015. The flagship model also adds in audiophile touches such as single board amplifier design, toroidal transformer and copper plated chassis for improved performance.
Other unifying features across the models include the use of Marantz’s proprietary Hyper Dynamic Amplification Module (HDAM) circuitry on all channels, which provides optimal fidelity and maximum dynamic range of high-resolution files, and the low impedance driver capability means a wide range of speakers can be used with the SR-Series.
In addition, all models above the SR5015 support Pre-Amplifier mode which provides a clear signal path and more tolerance of clipping levels by disconnecting internal amplifiers when the receiver is used as an AV processor and all speakers are powered by external amplifiers.
Next Generation HDMI Technologies
The latest HDMI technologies are employed across the SR-Series and a dedicated 8K HDMI input enables 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz video pass-through, plus there's newly implemented support for the HDR10+ dynamic metadata HDR format, and Quick Media Switching which allows a source to instantly switch frame rate to eliminate screen blackout.
Upscaling of HD and 4K content will enable greater access to the 8K experience for those with compatible 8K TVs and the transfer of lossless and object-based audio such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X from TV apps or connected devices continues to be supported via eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel).
Finally, gamers will appreciate the advanced HDMI features such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) which reduces frame tearing and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT), each designed to reduce lag and improve the overall experience
HEOS Built-in, Roon and Hi-Res Support
The HEOS Built-in system allows connectivity with any other HEOS compatible hardware around the house, allowing for a multiroom or whole home audio experience. The SR-Series can handle playback of MP3 and Hi-Res audio files up to 24-bit/192-kHz, and in a variety of formats including WAV, FLAC, ALAC and DSD 2.8/5.6 MHz files.
Access to music is possible from services like Spotify, Amazon Music HD, TIDAL, TuneIn Internet Radio and more, and users can also play songs stored on smart devices or personal media servers. Since each SR AVR is Roon Tested certified, listeners can get more out of their music libraries through the advanced Roon music interface on their PCs and smart devices and set up is easily enabled via AirPlay 2 or by hardwiring into a Roon Core device.
Fans of vinyl are included too and can connect their turntable to the SR’s phono input which features an advanced phono stage with Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules which improve upon traditional integrated circuits.
Audyssey Room Calibration
All the models feature Audyssey Room Calibration technology so owners can optimise each channel’s output based on analysis of the audio from the speakers, including subwoofers. Up to eight measurements are taken per speaker using the supplied microphone, and precise digital filters are used to calibrate each channel for the correct frequency and time domain response based on the layout of the room.
Additional features such as Audyssey Dynamic Volume smooths the sudden volume jumps in volume between content and ad breaks while Audyssey Dynamic EQ helps to provide full-range clarity at any listening level.
The SR5015 uses Audyssey MultEQ XT while the SR6015, 7015 and 8015 upgrade to MultEQ XT32 which adds Low Frequency Containment using advanced psychoacoustic algorithms to deliver more full-range balance without disturbing neighbours and housemates. There’s also Audyssey Sub EQ HT which provides individual DSP tailoring of each subwoofer in a dual subwoofer setup and for those who wish to really get granular, there’s the optional (paid for) Audyssey MultEQ Editor app so users can view and adjust settings for detailed tuning.
Finally, Dual Speaker Preset Memory allows users to switch seamlessly between two separate calibrated speaker setups on the fly - perhaps to adjust the sweet spot for a variety of listening situations.
The SR Series features HDMI Auto Input Rename for when sources such as a PS4 (or upcoming PS5) or Apple TV are plugged in, so manual renaming of an input is not required, and HDMI Multiple Input Assign allows users to listen to multiple audio sources while maintaining the same video content on-screen.
And if all these options sound daunting, Marantz includes a Set Up Assistant which provides step by step instructions including the Audyssey Room Calibration process to make getting up and running a breeze.
