Panasonic updating 2017 TVs with HDR10+ support

2017 TVs still have HDR legs

by Andy Bassett
It looks like Panasonic are updating some of their older TVs with firmware that enables HDR10+ support, if reports from some European news sources are true. AVForums has contacted Panasonic UK and they confirm UK sets will get the update.
Having already updated their 2018 OLED and LCD TVs to enable HDR10+ support, 4filme.de reports that Panasonic has started rolling out an over the air firmware update that will bring HDR10+ support to their 4K Pro TVs from 2017.

With recent announcements by Panasonic regarding a Netflix Calibrated Mode and Netflix Recommended TV status for their new 2019 OLED models, it’s refreshing to see that owners with older TVs are not being ignored when it comes to improvements too.

Panasonic is a member of the HDR10+ Alliance which promotes and supports the implementation of the HDR10+ alternative to Dolby Vision’s dynamic metadata HDR format. The company has made its 2019 OLED range and some of its 2019 LCD/LED models compatible with both formats in an effort to help consumers get the best of both worlds.

Both dynamic metadata HDR formats ensure that the source material is mapped exactly to the HDR capabilities of the screen so it can be viewed as accurately as possible - both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision do this on a scene by scene basis so the content is always displayed optimally.

Despite the good news regarding HDR10+ support being introduced, there are no reported plans by Panasonic to perform a similar update for older TVs to enable Dolby Vision compatibility.

With Vizio updating TVs from 2016 with a recent AirPlay 2 and HomeKit updates and now Panasonic updating their 2017 TVs, it looks like there’ll be no need to update to the latest models just yet.

Panasonic UK has confirmed that UK sets will get the update and they will be:
  • LCD models

    TX-50EX750B TX-58EX750B TX-65EX750B TX-75EX750B
    OLED models
    TX-55EZ952B TX-65EZ952B TX-65EZ1002B TX-77EZ1002B
Have any AVForums members got a 2017 Panasonic TV? Will an HDR10+ update get more out of it for you and maybe put off an upgrade for a few more years? Let us know in the discussion thread.
