Philips tends to hold a little something back TV and audio wise for the second half of the year and despite the challenges thrown at the electronics industry in 2020, it has now pulled a new flagship TV out of the hat - the OLED+935.

Sidestepping IFA 2020, Philips made the announcement at its own on line event, presenting what most had been expecting, a premium end OLED model to sit at the top of the 2020 tree above the OLED805 and OLED865.

As with last year’s OLED+934 and OLED+984, the OLED+935 once again has an inbuilt sound system which is the result of the ongoing collaboration between the company and UK speaker specialists Bowers & Wilkins - one that will continue for at least three more years, it was recently confirmed.

And Philips becomes the third mainstream manufacturer after LG and Sony to add a 48-inch model to their 2020 OLED ranges, the OLED+935 series also coming in a 55- and 65-inch model.

Add to that the 4th Generation P5 Picture Perfect image processor with enhanced AI PQ performance, Philips’s proprietary Ambilight, support for HDR in the form of Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG plus a unique anti-burn-in technology designed to help protect the OLED panel, along with the best of European design and materials and the OLED+935 is looking like a promising premium TV for 2020.

With a philosophy of continuous improvement, the OLED+935 sees a second dedicated AI chip added to the 4th Gen P5 processor to offer a new enhanced version of the AI system, called the new Intelligent Dual Engine. Using millions of image quality test clips from a unique database which have been analysed by the AI using machine learning, the P5 processor can create a better balance between Philips’s five picture quality ‘pillars’ of source, colour, contrast, motion and sharpness to produce a much more realistic, natural image. The enhanced AI system has added a new dedicated AI Machine Learn Sharpness function, an improved AI Smart Bit Enhancement system and an improved version of the Perfect Natural Reality (PNR) function.

The Intelligent Dual Engine has the additional power to offer a unique anti-burn-in solution that uses an advanced logo detection function to monitor a grid of 32,400 zones, to very accurately detect static content and gradually reduce the intensity of its local light output and avoid burn-in - and without compromising the output of other parts of the screen. Philips are confident that this new feature removes the burn-in problem for 95% of static images, including logos and gaming content.

The OLED+935 has support for all of the major HDR formats including for HLG and both HDR10 & HDR10+ sources, while also improving Dolby Vision encoded dynamic HDR content using the special ‘Dolby Bright mode’. Also benefiting movie fans who want to see content the way the creator intended is the introduction of Filmmaker Mode.

As well as improved image quality the OLED+935 will deliver on the audio front with an audiophile quality, ten driver 3.1.2 Bowers & Wilkins sound system which combines the first Dolby Atmos Elevation speakers on a Philips TV and of course features Bowers and Wilkins unique Tweeter-on-Top technology. The OLED+935 will automatically recognise and decode Dolby Atmos content to ensure the very best results. Alternatively, by engaging Movie mode, the TV will use ‘up-mixing’ with non-Dolby Atmos content to bring outstanding, three-dimensional immersion to older types of content from its Elevation drive units.

Philips’s Ambilight technology is implemented on four sides and can be used to project light on the wall to the rear of the TV to follow the action on screen or as part of a music performance, or more practically as a bias light to ease eye strain from long sessions watching bright images in a dark room. In these circumstances, the ultra-slim bezel helps create a totally unique, immersive viewing experience. There’s a new ‘wellness’ feature to the Ambilight system with the Sunrise function now joined by a new Ambilight Sleep mode.

The inclusion of DTS Play-Fi allows connectivity with other devices using the platform to create whole house and multiroom audio.

The TV, its stand and speaker’s finishes are enhanced with Kvadrat cloth, leather, steel and chrome metal and a new  premium remote control with flush, backlit keys in a metalized finish has also been included, with the sides and rear of the RC wrapped in responsibly sourced leather from Scottish specialists Muirhead.

The OLED+935 is also Smart, featuring Android TV version 9 (Pie) and an extended roster of Apps, running smoothly thanks to an internal memory of 3GB. Ease-of-use is guaranteed via a new more intuitive UI and by the inclusion of both Google Assistant built-in and Works With Alexa capabilities.

The OLED+935 55-inch and 65-inch models will be available in September and the 48-inch is coming in October priced as follows:

  • 48-inch OLED935: £1800
  • 55-inch OLED935: £2000
  • 65-inch OLED935: £2700
