Philips TV and Sound Wireless Home System launched

Philips 2019 Android TVs will get to join the party.

by Andy Bassett

In support of its Play-Fi based wireless ecosystem, Philips plans a range of supporting products including the upcoming W6505 and W6205 wireless speakers and the new 8000 series of soundbars, featuring five models.

Philips has introduced a new wireless ecosystem for connecting supported AV devices, called the Philips TV & Sound Wireless Home System. Based on the DTS Play-Fi technology it will feature an expanding range of compatible Philips products all bought together using the new Philips Sound App which allows intuitive installation and connection of devices.

DTS Play-Fi technology, is a premium whole-home, wireless audio platform that uses standard Wi-Fi networks and allows consumers to stream high-quality audio from TV and mobile devices to compatible speakers throughout the home, using proprietary streaming, synchronization, and authentication technology.

Philips TV and Sound Wireless Home System launched

Philips first announced its intention to equip all of its 2020 Android TVs with DTS Play-Fi earlier this year and this is now being expanded to its 2019 Android TVs from the 7304 model upwards, via an over the air firmware update due in the 3rd quarter of 2020. In addition, the company has just announced its latest Fidelio B95 and B97 soundbars which also feature Play-Fi and which can therefore connect to the  Wireless Home System.

Although DTS Play-Fi is designed to connect across manufacturers, research has shown that consumers like consistency across their devices and up to 80 percent will choose a soundbar by the same manufacturer as their TV, if they have the choice. And if the TV is dictating speaker choices, it makes sense for Philips to ensure a healthy portfolio of products for consumers to call upon that can all commit to its new Wireless Home System.

W6205 and W6505 wireless speakers

Therefore, with this in mind, the company has announced two two high-quality wireless audio speakers - the vertically orientated W6205 and the larger, horizontally orientated W6505.

The W6205 features a 1-inch soft dome tweeter and a 3.5-inch woofer supported by two passive bass radiators that adopt Philips’s unique, patented wOOx multi-suspension driver system to offer the maximum bass extension, all working with 40W of power onboard. Audio performance can be extended by adding a second W6205 to form a stereo pair.

The larger W6505 ups the ante thanks to the inclusion of two 1-inch soft dome tweeters plus two 3.5-inch woofers that join the two wOOx enabled passive bass radiators. With 80W of power, the W6505 is suited for larger spaces.

Both speakers allow a wide choice of wireless connectivity via Bluetooth, Google Chromecast and Apple Airplay 2 and also feature Spotify Connect, plus access to all major streaming services via the Philips Sound app. There’s also hands free control as both the W6205 and W6505 work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant and also with voice activation via Siri for connected iOS devices.

The wireless pair also have built in LED lights and their unique ‘Works with Ambilight’ feature means they can connect and sync with Philips TVs to extend the immersive effect of Ambilight further into the room.

The current Philips design stylings of a dark grey, acoustically transparent Kvadrat cloth wrap around the main body with an ultra-thin, minimalist metal top are present and correct too.

Series 8000 Soundbars

In addition to the new premium Philips Fidelio B95 & B97 soundbars, Philips TV & Sound is launching five additional soundbars in the company’s new 8000 range, all compatible with the Philips Wireless Home System.

This will include the single bar, integrated 2.1 channel 120W B8205 al the way up to the fully featured, 3.1.2 channel B8905 with Dolby Atmos Elevation drivers, 360W of power, a wireless sub and e-arc connectivity.

The W6505 and W6205 wireless audio speakers will both be available in the final quarter 2020 while the Series 8000 soundbars are due from September 2020 as part of the new Wireless Home System.
