Samsung expands HDR10+ with 8K content support

HDR10+ gains further followers

HDR10+ is Samsung’s HDR baby and it is expanding the ecosystem by partnering with major Euoropean streaming services to support its dynamic metadata format in 8K content.
HDR10+ is an alternative version to Dolby Vision HDR, and like most technologies needs to work with compatible components, thus HDR10+ needs to have support in all parts of the transmission chain and that starts with the broadcaster or streaming provider and ends with the method of display (TV, phone, projector). Samsung has the display element covered since the feature is available on all their 2019 QLED UHD TV and 8K TV models and it is now pushing to expand HDR10+ support into 8K content.

The South Korean TV firm has, therefore, joined forces with three European OTT (Over-the-Top) service providers - CHILI, The Explorers and MEGOGO - who will adopt 8K HDR10+ alongside support for 4K HDR10+.

Samsung is also collaborating with several other industry-leading content partners about adopting HDR10+ and these include Rakuten TV, Deutsche Telekom’s Magenta TV, Videociety and French OTT streaming service Molotov, most of whom are expected to start adding support for the format in their streaming services by late this year and or early 2020.

With HDR emerging as one of the most important technologies for ultra-high picture quality, our HDR10+ format enables every image to be accurately displayed on screen just as the creator intended,” said Hyogun Lee, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to strengthen our industry leadership through establishing partnerships with top streaming service providers and equipping our televisions with the technology needed to support the world’s first 8K HDR10+.”

MEGOGO plans to provide dozens of HDR10+ movies to Samsung Smart TV users starting late in the summer and HDR10+ content availability continues to expand elsewhere. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is debuting HDR10+ on UHD Blu-ray for The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will add the format to its UHD release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, adding to the UHD Blu-ray discs already released from Twentieth Century Fox and others.

Since Samsung, Panasonic and 20th Century Fox (before the Disney buy out) started the HDR10+ logo certification program, 81 companies have joined the program and the alliance is expected to grow. TV manufacturers are starting to incorporate HDR10+ support in their ranges and Panasonic and Philips have released TVs with support for both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision in an effort to make sure the consumer has access to the latest HDR technology no matter which TV they choose.
