Samsung QLED TVs outsell combined OLED sales

Samsung’s quantum leap in sales.

by Andy Bassett
Sales of Samsung’s Quantum Dot LCD/LED TVs have outstripped those of OLED TVs from the top 5 manufacturers for a third successive quarter.
Quoting data from IHS Markit, Business Korea reports that the first quarter of 2019 saw Samsung QLED sales hit 896,400 units while combined sales of OLEDs from LG Electronics, Sony Panasonic, Philips (AOC / TP Vision) and Skyworth accounted for 569,600 units.

This was down on the 4th quarter numbers from 2018 which saw the gap between the two technologies reduced to less than 200,000, reflecting sales of 1,080,900 QLEDS and 867,700 OLEDS.

These figures are consistent with the reported 2018 total sales figures of 2.67 million QLEDs sold and 2.51 million OLED TVs sold and IHS Markit, an information analyst and provider with specialisms in global TV trends, predicts that this trend of QLED sales exceeding those of organic light emitting diode (OLED) TVs will continue to 2022, giving overall sales of 10.46 million QLED TVs vs. 9.35 Million OLED TVs.

These anticipated figures take into account the combined sales of QLEDs from Samsung, TCL, HiSense and Vizio and from a total of nine OLED manufacturers where sales of 10,000 OLED units were achieved in Q1 of 2019.

Samsung Electronics accounts for 98 percent of QLED TV sales while LG Electronics takes up 62.2 percent of the OLED TV market. Both technologies are key strategic elements for the respective companies as they take different approaches to a TV market which is undergoing a slow down in sales due to overproduction of LCD panels by Chinese manufacturers, which is driving down prices of LCD TVs, and tensions over trading conditions between the US and China.

Despite these market conditions, and the increase in competition from Chinese manufacturers in the low-mid priced TV markets, industry experts forecast that Samsung will retain its position at the top of the global TV revenue tree for the time being.
