Yamaha announces new look RX-V4A and RX-V6A AV receivers

8K support, HDMI 2.1 features and Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization on their way

by Andy Bassett

Yamaha’s latest AV receivers bring multiple 8K inputs, a more curved aesthetic and greater immersion.

As the face of home entertainment changes with developments in technology and arguably becomes more important as life in a pandemic restricts activities such as cinema and concert attendance, Yamaha’s latest mid range AV receivers in its RX-V line are being  prepped for an upcoming autumn launch.

Hoping to be the centre for your music, movies and gaming experiences the RX-V4A and RX-V6A have been redesigned from the ground up to incorporate support for 8K, HDMI 2.1 gaming features and HDR10+, making them compatible with the latest displays and those around the corner.

The 5 channel RX-V4A features 80W of power per channel while the beefier and more expensive of the two models, the RX-V6A is a 7 channel AV receiver with 100W per channel. The new models both incorporate a newly designed High Slew Rate Amplifier circuit which means they can adapt more quickly to rapid changes in input level and are suitable for high resolution audio signals.

And while both models will support 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz they go one further than other AV receivers currently on the market by offering multiple 8K inputs, with the RX-V4A accommodating 8K on all four of its HDMI inputs while the RX-V6A will support 8K sources on three out of its seven HDMI inputs.

For gamers, the upcoming inclusion of HDMI 2.1 compatible features such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rates (VRR), Quick Frame Transport (QFT) and Quick Media Switching (QMS) will provide a faster, smoother, uninterrupted experience which will be especially useful when combining the AV receiver with emerging 8K TVs and the upcoming next generation gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Yamaha has also boosted the power supply from the HDMI outputs to 300mA to support the use of powered HDMI cables for longer wiring needs.

All the inputs support Dolby Vision and, as well as DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, the RX-V6A also adds Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization to simulate the overhead sound experience for an immersive 360-degree sound field where physical overhead speakers might not be available.

The entire suite of MusicCast capabilities and app control is offered by the RX-V4A and RX-V6A, including Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, built-in music streaming services, multi-room audio and voice control via Alexa, Google and Siri-enabled devices. In addition, Yamaha’s MusicCast 20 and MusicCast 50 wireless speakers can be paired to the receivers to create a clutter free 5.1 channel setup.

In order to get the best sound in your particular viewing or listening environment, the RX-V AV receivers utilise YPAO (Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimizer) to analyse the room's acoustics and then adjust various audio parameters to provide the best sound for your room, providing optimum performance via automatic calibration.

All these features are housed in a new, simplified, modern design that features a brand new, high-resolution LCD display and a jog dial with touch-sensitive buttons.
