Xiaomi adding Dolby Vision to upcoming L65M5-OD TV?

Chinese brand catches up with popular HDR format

Hugely popular in China and India, Xiaomi are rumoured to be adding Dolby Vision to its TV lineup for the first time and it could be showcased on the upcoming LM65M5-OD.

Expected to be a 65-inch OLED TV and part of the company’s Mi TV 5 series that launched in China at the end of 2019, Xiaomi’s latest TV will add Dolby Vision HDR for the first time, according to a social media post by a company official.

Appearing on China’s Weibo microblogging platform, an image shared by General Manager of Xiaomi’s TV Department seemed to confirm the addition of Dolby Vision.

Xiaomi adding Dolby Vision to upcoming L65M5-OD TV?

Up until now, even Xiaomi’s higher end models such as the Quantum Dot featuring Mi TV 5 Pro series TVs only supported the lesser adopted HDR10+  flavour of dynamic metadata HDR.

Now the information included in the image clearly mentions ‘... with Dolby Vision consumer decoder’ and ‘... approved by Dolby Laboratories’ so certification seems all but officially confirmed. There’s no word whether HD10+ is retained or dropped in favour of Dolby Vision.

Other interesting details include the use of the ‘OD’ suffix which most likely indicates the new models will be an OLED TV and the screen size is strongly hinted at by the inclusion of ‘65’, which is standard industry practice. Finally, the M5 element of the model name is most likely a reference to the Mi 5 Series indicating that the OLED TV will join the QLED models in the Mi 5 /Mi 5 Pro family.

In 2019, Xiaomi shipped over 10 million smart TVs in China alone with the company’s TV shipments ranked number one in the Chinese market and fifth in the global market. The addition of Dolby Vision support, along with an OLED based panel could see Xiaomi’s TVs start to attract attention outside of their current domestic stronghold.

Adding Dolby Vision to an OLED TV would bring the specification more in line with the expectations of European TV consumers but would it be an attractive proposition to AVForums readers if accompanied by a competitive price too? Let us know your thoughts in the discussion thread.
