Hi all
I am new to speaker builds and could do with some help on a sub box design. I am competent with the manufacture of a sub box but as for the best design I am at a loss . I don't have much space so from what I have read a sealed enclosure is best?
I only have a MAC so can't use Winisd can anyone help?
Thanks

Not much needed in the way of design for a sealed sub, just the volume. Parts-Express suggest 4 cu. ft. "Dayton Audio UM18-22 18" Ultimax DVC Subwoofer 2 ohms Per Coil" from www.parts-express.com! so that would suggest an enclosure of around 21" (53cm) cubed allowing for driver and bracing assuming external amplification.

Great thanks for the info, any other advise like do I need to put any fibre fill inside the box and can you recommend a good external amp I have been loon looking at the crown XLS amps.

Have a look at my build thread in my signature, I used both felt damping for the walls together with some fibre fill inside (loosely filled) but views vary. Crown amps are very good (I have two) but many use iNuke, in particular the 6000 range with built-in DSP.

When building the box dowel rods provide very good bracing with minimum weight penalty and 18mm mdf is very popular for the box itself. A double baffle is advised. Other than that it's pretty straightforward. I would recommend reading as many build threads for ideas, that helped me enormously.

Good luck. :)

Hi
Thanks for all the info, it took me a while but I finally got round to making it. I haven’t finished it yet just got the paint and feet to go.
I couldn’t help testing it and was disappointed, to get any volume out of the sub I have to turn the gain right up on the sub out and all the way down on the rest of the speakers.
The av amp is a Yamaha RX-A830 and I went for the crown XLS 1502 in bridged mode.
Do I need a signal booster as the output has always been fine on my old sub with a built in plate amp.

Nice work :smashin:

I'm not sure why you are not getting sufficient output, your Crown amp bridged should provide ample output to have this sub singing at 1,550 watts. Which sensitivity setting are you using on the Crown?

Have you run calibration on the Yamaha yet? If so, in the setup process is it getting a sufficient output from the sub to carry out the calibration correctly?

I have got the input on the amp set to heigh sensitivity.775
The only way I could get an output on the sub was turning the gain all the way up in manual and all the other speakers turned down.
I then have to turn the crown all the way up and the av amp nearly all the way up.
I assume that plate amps work with a much lower input ?

How are you connecting from the Yamaha to the Crown and from the Crown to the driver?

Do you know the lead(s) to be working correctly?

Did you test the driver before placing in the cabinet?

How have you wired the two voice coils? Do you have any pics?

Did you manage to carry out a calibration?

0.775v is very high sensitivity and certainly at least as high as the plate amps I would think.

Sorry for all the questions. :)

Hi questions are good I need the help.
I have the crown connected to the av amp with an RCA lead, I have tried it with a few to see if that was the problem.
I am pretty sure it’s a signal issue and not a speaker wiring as the level lights on the from of the crown hardly light up.
I have two sub outputs on the amp and both work fine with the plate amp on my other sub.
Do I need a sub lead or is that the same as a regular rca?

I agree, that does seem to suggest that. If the RCA to RCA lead works on the plate amp of your other sub then it should work the same on the Crown.

I'm sorry, I can't think what else to ask other than the points above. Perhaps someone else can jump in with some suggestions?

What are your exterior dimensions? Did you calculate the resulting interior volume (external amp, correct?)? Noticed the rounded edges: what material did you use?

I am absolutely not a specialis but this sounds like the driver is incorrectly wired?
Did you wire it in series or parallel? (did you wire both coils?)

Ah its a old topic, was this ever resolved?
Another question, is it normal to boost the lower frequencies on a sealed sub with PEQ?
