Do we have any Sloe Gin fans here?

That reminds me, mine should be ready by now :)

Lovely colour:

Yes, I'm really pleased with it.

Well I started the rhubarb and ginger 2 months ago. I gave some away but added more R&G to the jar and left it another month before decanting today.

The soggy bits.

Murky.

Slooow progress through the coffee filter.

Could really do with another pass but I CBA.

As for the flavour, it's disappointing :(
It's not unpleasant but neither my wife or I can taste rhubarb or ginger.

Sounded nice, but perhaps the natural flavor of the rhubarb just vanished over time.
Reminded me of a video I watched the other day about NATURAL orange juice that they store, and they have to add more flavor in at the end as it goes away.

Or: Ramp up the Rhubarb.

How about a jar of this to save/improve it,
Rhubarb Concentrated Flavouring 40ml - The Vanilla Valley

and you can add to taste, so the taste matches what you want.

I would have agreed but there wasn't much flavour after the first month, hence why I added more. I'll just neck it with tonic I think.

Mine was quite strong on the rhubarb but I did lightly roast the rhubarb pieces with the sugar before steeping in the vodka. I really think that made a difference in bringing out the flavour. Was a good shade of pink as well

For a positive, it was pleasant with tonic, ice and a slice of orange. My wife doesn't care for G&T but she took several sips of this before declaring it nice. Helped by the sugar no doubt.

Sloes should be ready for picking next month, so making way for a new batch.

This was started about 9 months ago. It turned out to be the darkest I have ever made.

Through the sieve to remove the berries, then four passes through the coffee filter to remove the fines.

Lots of flavour, very pleased with the result.

The part that won't fit in the bottle will be sampled tonight

Need to buy a couple more small Kilner bottles. People rarely return those

Still have the stuff I made last year - it is quite nice but a quick 2 month creation. Might go and pick some sloes soon and try a 9 month creation for next year.

Cheers,

Nigel

Too many variables to be sure that time is the only factor but this particular sloe gin is really good, by far my best. Nice and smooth, no harshness from the gin and a slightly tart aftertaste from the sloes.

Always leave mine a year before supping.

Been a pickin this morning. The first bush that greeted me had plenty of berries although a bit small. The rest down the lane have been well picked over. I thought I had picked more, but they weighed in at a kilo. Took about half an hour.

They are nicely ripe but I have put them in the freezer to soften the further.

Washed, rinsed and dried in the oven.

I normally use Gordons but this time I decided to use some of what was already in the cupboard.

6 tablespoons of dissolved sugar go into each jar along with the blended gins.

Tops secured and a quick shake. Then into the back of the wardrobe to forget about.

I really take my hat off to you folks who have the discipline to be able to do this.
I'm a bit more like...
1. Buy gin
2. Drink gin

2.1 Wait ~3 months (this is the tricky bit)
2.2 Drink gin

:)

I picked up a couple liters of Gordons yesterday. I don't know if it'll last past xmas though. I've taken a liking to G&T's :D never tried one until Friday.

It helps if you can get in front by a litre or so. I still have half a bottle from last year to go at. So no hurry to get into the new batch.

We did a Christmas gin and a Damson one this year.

Christmas one has orange peel, cloves and a cinnamon stick in. Dmason was just fresh damsons and a little sugar. Damson is a little sweet for me but the Christmas one is lovely with tonic - Christmas in a glass :)

It's that time of year again folks....

Picked this little lot this morning, best crop for a number of years and a good size too.
