Greyhound (Apple TV+) Movie Review & Comments

How can I get this on my tv, don’t want to watch it on my iPad !?

How can I get this on my tv, don’t want to watch it on my iPad !?

You can mirror using a chrome box, or just get a cheap adapter and plug your iPad into your TV. And, as above, a few TVs are lucky enough to have an Apple TV app.

Thanks for the review Cas,i wonder if their will ever be an 4K UHD disc release of this ? :)
Gutted I haven't got Apple TV. Everything else but. Will this come out to but in 4k disc?

I believe Masters Of Air will be apple TV too?

Favourite genre and favourite actor so can’t wait to see this, one small problem in that I don’t have Apple TV :( hopefully not too long till it comes out on disk
Exactly me this.

From what I've heard, Apple paid a LOT of money for this, so I'd assume they have exclusivity for quite a while.

For comparison, Netflix's Roma took about 15 months to make it to disc, and whilst this was a Sony movie, I'd be surprised if Apple didn't demand at least 6-9 months clear to recoup some of the cost of picking it up through subscribers / retaining subscribers.

Flipside is there's little 'new' making it to 4K now (for obvious reasons), and this'd be crying out for 4K treatment, so maybe Sony were clever enough to work in something a little sooner. If they'd stuck with their June theatrical release, it probably would have landed September/October, so there's an outside chance they agreed with Apple to commit to that, or maybe a commensurate month later, but it's a long shot.

Only time will tell, but I'd try a free trial - it's well worth it.

Watched it last night,a good solid 8 from me,just i find sound on streaming is not up their with discs, shame being an Apple TV +,i doubt we will ever get to see it on disc :(.

Must dig out my old DVD set of the Battle of the Atlantic, documentary.

But well worth a watch :)

Thanks for the review, Cas.

A few years ago, your review of The Hunt For Red October, plus the other Jack Ryan films, on blu-ray gave me the nudge to buy the complete set. They were films that I had seen once, as a regular cinema goer back then, but your excellent reviews got me interested in watching them again at home. The Hunt For Red October is now an annual watch in my household and I have all the Ryan films on UHD.

I really liked the trailer for Greyhound but I probably wouldn't have gone to the cinema to see it and the 4K disc probably wouldn't be a blind buy I would splash out on but your review has convinced me to take up the free trial for Apple TV+ to watch it. I'll be well pleased if it's even half as good as THFRO so I'm glad that you saw some comparisons in the two films.

Much appreciate the comment. I remember the Tom Clancy retrospective well. Did one for the Mission Impossible films too to tie in to the 4th, IIRC.

There is certainly a THFRO vibe and thus, in turn, a Wrath of Khan vibe, which is what all the best 'naval' thrillers can only hope for really. It's wonderfully played out here, desperately tense and as many others have commented, a very welcome no frills runtime.

Thinking about it, it's a shame that no other Star Trek movie really managed to quite pull off that naval battles vibe (maybe Undiscovered Country came close), as it seems an obvious tactic which would have suited the action.

Here hoping i think it would be well worth it :smashin:

I caved in and did the 1 month free trial thing to watch it last night.

Excellent - thoroughly enjoyable, but like others, thought it a little short.

I also agree with SimonBlue, in that the sound is not up with Bluray disks with the likes of DTX or Dolby True HD - especially as regards dynamics and sense of slam in explosions etc.

The sound track is very atmospheric and great surround sound 'effects' being Dolby Atmos, but they would be low bitrate, lossy compressed AAC channels, and with dynamic range compression suitable for the lowest common denominator - i.e. a TV.

Hence the sound just lacked that sense of excitement one gets from Bluray and studio master quality audio.

If the film comes out later on 4k UHD bluray I'll definitely be buying.

Am new to apple tv + - the main complaint being a small choice relative to Netflix and Prime.

Unlike those two streaming channels however, what is available looks to be very high quality picture and sound (better subjectively then either Netflix or Prime) and none of the filler, B & C grade cable network programs that seem to bedevil both Netflix and Prime when you're scanning for a good movie to watch. So will see how it goes.

Cheers

Fantastic movie - I'd been looking forward to this. Quality of picture and sound was better than I thought and pretty good, but still not up to disk standard, at least not on a projector. So now that's done and whilst I wait for a 4k disk release I can cancel my trial subscription now :)

Thanks for the Review, Cas. From the Trailer, I wasn't sure that I'dd really like this, but your comments referring to Master & Commander & Hunt for Red October (Two of my Absolute Favourite Movies) have me engaged. Maybe time for the free trial!
And plus points on the Wrath of Kahn nod - a great Movie anyway, but the Battle in the Cloud was so dead on regarding three dimensional tactics, & the degradation of Sensors in certain environments. All that was missing was an inversion layer! ;)

Now it's Time for a Movie or Multi Part Series of Red Storm Rising!! :)

Thanks Cas, sounds like a great watch, will put this on later when my dad comes over, sounds like one he’ll enjoy!

I'm surprised some people are complaining Greyhound is too short, because so many films these days have bloated running times that out-stay their welcome. For me Greyhound was perfect, and any attempt to cut away or expand the running time would have broken the tension. The whole point was that Hanks's character didn't even have time to eat a sandwich, let alone indulge in introspection or unnecessary character development.

I'm much more interested in the upcoming Spielberg/Hanks Apple TV+ miniseries Masters Of the Air. A spiritual successor to Band Of Brothers and The Pacific.

Watched it last night, been waiting for this for a while. I had marked this down as a “must watch” after I got a chance to see the preview a couple of weeks ago.

Absolutely riveting war film with Tom Hanks at the helm. Fantastic implementation of Dolby Vision/Atmos. Being a WWII fanatic, this was a treat to watch and it definitely lived up to (or probably even surpassed) the hype. 8.5-9 /10 in my books.

BTW, if you purchased some new Apple hardware (Iphone/iPad/ATV/ Mac) you get one year of free Apple plus subscription. However, I’m not sure If that’s region specific.

I recently purchased an ATV-4k and was prompted to activate my 1 yr free subscription while setting up the ATV. Works flawlessly on WebOS as well after a recent update, which unlocked Dolby Vision/Atmos; features which were previously exclusive to ATV.

I've started my free trial especially for this - then I'll cancel it. Can't wait for this evening, kids in bed, wine and Doritos :)
Before you cancels check out a few of the terrific shows.
Defending Jacob
For All Mankind
See
Servant

Just to name a few.

I generally agree, but it's easier to care about the characters when you've spent a bit of time with them for the first 30 mins or so before it all kicks off. I feel like we never really got to know much about Hanks' character at all. He was in San Francisco with his wife and then all of sudden he's at sea and being attacked by U Boats.

I enjoyed the movie overall, and Hanks was of course superb, but I wouldn't have said no to another 15 mins or so.

Why don't you watch some of the shows on ATV+? They have quite a few now. I'm watching For All Mankind at the moment, and it's pretty good. I've also watched Servant and Truth Be Told. Everything looks expensive, as you'd expect.

You know, Cas, whilst I was watching Greyhound last night, I was racking my brains as to what film it reminded me of in structure and feeling and that's the one, The Wrath Of Khan.

I thoroughly enjoyed Greyhound. It's very much a plot-driven movie rather than a character driven piece. We only really get to know Tom Hank's character but that's not really a surprise as the story is pretty much wholly told from his point of view. It's no shock that Hank's plays a blinder, as he nearly always does, as the rookie Captain who's strong religious beliefs drive his every decision and is racked with short bouts of self doubt in his quieter moments. The only other characters we really get to know slightly are Stephen Graham's second-in-command officer and the head chef played by Rob Morgan. But even then, it's mainly by their involvement with Hank's captain.

Yes, it's a short film but I'm glad that it is. Normally, I love the sprawling two and a half hour epics but on this occasion the ninety minute running time meant that the film just moved from one nail-bitingly tense scene to another. The audience, like Hank's Captain Krause, never get a moment to take a breather, which is a clever choice by the film-makers that helps show the audience the split-second nature of life and death choices naval officers probably had to make at the time. My own teenaged grandad was a depth-charger's mate on a destroyer escorting the Artic convoy during WWII and he would tell me when I was young about the fear that all those onboard went through whilst far out to sea knowing that they could be under attack at any second and fire onboard could mean burning to death or if you went into the water, freezing to death.

Good looking film too. The whole film is shot in that blue-grey tint of the ocean and battleships but the HDR means that everything shows a nice level of detail and when there is some colour, like the Christmas scene at the very beginning and the flashes of red on the U-boat's insignia, it really stands out.

Fantastic film. I had a great, if tense, time watching it last night. I'd highly recommend taking the free trial on Apple TV+ to watch it.

Just watched this in my home cinema on the big screen in 4K and Dolby Atmos, and I loved it. The film is a tourniquet-tight 90 minutes, looks awesome, sounds fantastic, and Hanks couldn't give a bad performance if he tried. I was even more impressed at the end, when I realised he also wrote it. A definite 9/10 from me.

I do not have an Apple TV box and am considering this as a purchase.

Does the 4K Apple TV box transmit Atmos with within a Dolby Digital+ container?

I do have an Amazon Fire TV 4k stick however. Have not opened the box yet, is ATV available as an app on this?

Edit - Just noticed that the amazon web site does say Apple TV but not if ATV will be Atmos.

Yes, the Apple TV supports Dolby Atmos.

Yes, you will get Dolby Atmos via Dolby Digital Plus if your AV Receiver / TV supports it. It's not lossless Dolby TrueHD Atmos, but it still sounds great.

The Disney+ and Netflix apps for Apple TV 4K both support Dolby Atmos as well as Dolby Vision (HDR).

Amazon Prime Video supports Dolby Digital Plus (and HDR), but I haven't found any content with Atmos on Amazon Prime (yet).

You currently get 12 months of AppleTV+ (the streaming service) when purchasing an Apple TV box, so there's that "discount" to factor in too ;)

I picked up an Apple TV 4K box last year and have got a lot of use out of it, despite having Sky Q, which is mostly used for watching Sky Sports.

The PQ and AQ provided by the Apple TV 4K Box is way better than Sky Q

Disclaimer: I currently have a 1080p SD TV, so I can't really comment on 4K / HDR. I have tried the Apple TV 4K box on my brother's 55" SONY AF8 OLED TV and it did look stunning. I'm hoping to upgrade to a 4K TV next year when funds permit!

Apart from a sprinkling of very hamfisted pathos, I’m in broad agreement. Visually stunning, in a tight 90 minutes that even manages to find the time for some slow Blade Runner 2049-esque environmental photography. Really enjoyed it.

I will add too that the bottom of the bottom end LFE has been sawed off. Nothing really goes below 30 or 40hz. Not sure why they did this as it definitely detracts from the experience. Reminded me of something like Thor: Ragnarok 4K disc where the LFE has been nerfed into oblivion.

I watched Dark Waters after watching this where the entire frequency range was present and the difference was huge. Bearing in mind that Greyhound needs good LFE a whole lot more than Dark Waters does,
