Don't mind the quotes, I am actually asking some general advice, I just saw these going through the General Chat thread here ;)

So, I just got an Xbox One and noticed it has the Kodi app on it. 'Awesome' I thought, I could possibly replace my HTPC with this and some external drives. I love and us Kodi on my HTPC and was wetting myself seeing that it had come back to Xbox! :D <3

I then notice there are only three on the device. Well one I'd want to shove a 5TB on to extend storage for more games and apps than I'll ever need.. as I have a spare 5TB USB 3 usb powered drive. So that's great! I'll get that on there when I run out of space :)

In the mean time, I'm thinking.. now how am I going to get 4 large (2x3TB 2x8TB) drives out of my system and only use up one port of the Xbox One.. Ah, I'll have search for 'USB HUB' in the Xbox One forum.. here's what I find:

Quick question peeps. Can i use a USB hub to connect multiple external HDDs to the rear usb port?

Yes, I have one for that very purpose. It's a powered USB hub, not sure how a passive unit would fair.

Should do, I have 3 hard disks plugged into it and they all run without a problem, a 2TB portable, a 5GB 3.5" external and a 512MB SSD.

2TB Games
5TB Porn

But what's the 512MB SSD for ?

Sometin 'specially durty

4K porn for when you need it in an instant

512mb of 4k porn, there's a joke there somewhere but for once I'll let someone else go there;)

About 2 mins [emoji23]

So no time for the plumber to be ringing the doorbell???

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

That really made my day! I'm still bloody crying with laughter now, me and my juvenile personality ;)

Anyway.. of course I would need to buy enclosures for each drive to power them... which would take up 4 plug sockets, which I lack, though I do have 4 more 5TB USB 3, usb powered drives that I keep back ups of my ripped media on, and I have an Anker 7 port USB 3 powered hub!

So would it be an option to use those 4 drives for all my tv, movies and music with?

I could then use my internal drives as the main back ups and the external 5TB ones for that.

I then remembered I was talking about 4-Bay NAS drives on the networking forum.. and thought, I wonder if it's possible to have one, huge, external hard drive.
So is there an enclosure that can take 2x3TB seagates (I think thats the brand) and 2x8TB seagate iron wolfs?

Also, I presume the Xbox One would see all four as 'one 22TB  drive' if said enclosure exists and does JBOD?

Lastly, since I've not owned an Xbox One S before, is there anything else I should consider, and/or need to know about it and it's capabilities as a media center?

I would really appreciate some advice :)

Cheers

I'm not much use on the kodi/media side for these questions as I don't really use it for that beyond a little Netflix.

It would be important for it to see it as one drive if that does indeed work as the Xbox will allow a maximum of 3 external drives connected at any one time even if you're using a USB hub. Try to add another and you'll get an error advising you to disconnect another first. I've tried!

Oh, crap..

Oh damn.. Looks like it'll either be the 4 bay enclosure in JBOD (if it works) or two 8TB externals for movies/tv rips and one 5TB for games and apps then.

So I guess the questions I should be asking would be:
Does the Xbox One S see a 4bay JBOD enclosure as one hard drive?

Would the one above suffice?
External 4x JBOD enclosure with eSATA and USB 3.0 from IcyBox IB-3640SU3

Or should I get two 8TB external drives (or enclosures) and use those and one of my 5TB with a powered hub?
If so, which powered 3 port usb hub should I use would you recommend?

Anything else I need to know?

Kodi doesn't work at all for me on the XboxOne. Others have had more success, but it is a Beta so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

It's on V18 Leia Alpha 2 now, unless it updated since last night. Will have a play about with it more in a bit.

I last tried it about a week ago because I ideally want to move away from using my Amazon Fire TV.

I couldn't get it to play any large files without juddering and it wouldn't output DD or DTS.

Most of my files are large as they are rips from my blue-rays. Will give them a try today and let you know how it is. It's still Alpha 1 on pc, so since it's Alpha 2 on Xbox One I'll hazard a guess that they are knuckling down on that one at the moment.

Will test with Plex too.

Backed up a drive to my pc 'just in case'.. Took a while to work out how to get my content into kodi.

Had the xbox on 7.1 uncompressed and it just pass's out audio in pcm.. not bad but I like seeing Dolby Atmos on my receiver.

Changed that to bitstream and it has an option for either:
Dolby Digital
DTS
or
Dolby Atmos

Selected Dolby Atmos, and now even films without a Dolby Atmos track are playing in 'Atmos'. Sounds fine to me, but now 'everything' is in 'Atmos'.. Strange.

MKV files seem fine, but mp4 rips don't seem to want to play for some reason. Since it's still in alpha it will probably be fixed. Only a handful of titles from my collection are mp4, so I can re rip those to MKV, only take a day or two. I'll post about it on the Kodi forums and see if there is a fix inbound.

Not having any juddering or Audio stutter for the past 45 minutes of a film so far, looks and sounds great. Maybe they have fixed the issue you came up with.

Nice and slick, so far. Will watch a couple of films and some tv and see how it go's.

In the mean time, I'm just trying to find out if a 4bay in JBOD will be recognised as one drive or not. No one seems to know so far.

I use the following hub from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product..._detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=av0c-21

I have an 8TB, 5TB (both 3.5" powered externals) and a 512GB SSD connected without any issues. Only thing is mine are all used for game storage and formatted by the xbox as such, can't see why media storage would be any different but hopefully someone here can confirm and also answer your question about the enclosure option.

In fact, it would be good to know if that was an option as it may be something I'd consider doing myself in the future.

Well, watched a couple of movies now, and something isn't quite right with the audio via Kodi at all.. Maybe it's just my ears, but the Atmos and DTS HD tracks just sound, odd. I'm not sure it's 'passing through' audio at all.

I am very picky with my movie soundtracks sounding near perfect. I'm going to look into this further.

@Kravenius I tried my 5TB drives and kodi populated the (very large) collection perfectly :) However, for me, the audio output is just not right with my Denon for DTS/Dolby and Atmos, all formats. It's good enough to watch tv episodes on, but I'll not bother with it for movies if that passthrough can't be fixed.

I'm going to have another look at my htpc and see if I can figure out whats wrong with that too since it's playing up. Of course, I'll be coming back with my findings.. probably late evening to early hours as I don't sleep much.
