Interesting if true. Although for gaming as there’s not much between the 3080 and 3090 I’m not sure what value having another card sitting between them would bring.

Nice comparison table in that article. A 3080Ti will be a small boost compared to 2080 vs 2080Ti was.

I spent more than that on new motherboard, PSU, ram and CPU and got less than 10% performance boost in games.

Everyone is thinking that it's only a 10-15% performance boost and 10GB memory is more than enough - Which may be the case right now, with games being made for the lowest denominator which is a 5 year old PS4 gen.
With new consoles coming out games will start to move forward again with new graphic tricks to stress cards, more games taking advantage of DLSS and RT, new gen games streaming in lots of graphic data from their fast SSDs etc. The next generation games in VR and 4k will quickly eat up those frames of a 3080 and 3090.
I'd rather know I have a bit of headroom over the 3080 rather than have a 3080 then realise that frame rates get to what it was previously like with the 2080ti , an £1100 GPU which struggled to hit 60fps @ 4k running some last gen console games and those same games had 8GB or more of vid memory used.

As an example. The mod linked in my sig has 6GB of textures loaded in and hits 60fps but dips to 52fps in certain parts. That may run at around 52fps on a 3080 and dip to low 40s in some areas. That game is 8 year old xbox 360 port.

So yeah, I'm happy with my 3090 and I'd buy another if they brought back a fully working NVLink.
Indeed
The 3090 can run games at levels the 3080 can't.
The vast majority of those who bought the 3080 won't use its full potential.
Less than 2%game at 4k. Even fewer game with proper hdr. That's because hardly any pc monitors can do proper hdr. They struggle to do 400 nits. That's a waste of time
Many bought the 3080 because they wanted to keep up with the joneses. Not to utilise it's potential.
They don't care about 4k ultra with hdr because their rigs can't cut it
The market for the 3090 is virtually non-existent
It's a card for graphics junkies who can play at 4k ultra.
10gb vram is enough for the vast majority of those who use the 3080 as they simply can't play at the highest level
For those who do want that highest level then only the 3090 can cut it.
I expect a 3090ti next year. Nvidia won't leave it with only the 3090.
For most pc gamers a 3070 will be more than enough power. But the 3080 came out first. Hence the clamour. Sadly, its a waste of technology for the vast majority.
The 3090 is way out of their league.

I'm on a 55" LG OLED 4K/120Hz and was only considering the 3090 for gaming as I couldn't get a 3080. My 2080Ti would not do 4K/120 as no HDMI2.1.

No way most people would be financially comfortable with the cost increase for 3090 vs 3080 for gaming unless you have so much money it means nothing. I would have had buyers remorse without a doubt if I'd bought one.

I had a 3090 in basket to buy at £1730! but managed to control myself and a week later managed to buy a full new gaming PC with 1000W PSU, Ryzen 3800X, AIO cooler,16GB RAM, 500GB NVMe4.0 drive, 2TB drive, Windows10 & pre-OC'ed MSI RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio for £1900 which a week later is now listed on ebuyer at £1999. No buyer remorse and one hell of a gaming machine.

If your happy with the price vs performance, then that's all that maters.

PS. Was on an old i7-7700 system so was due a full upgrade anyway.

What a load of rubbish.
Anyone running a 1440p 144hz monitor will benefit from a 3080. I'm surprised the mods allow such trolling

With Sony and Microsoft supporting last gen for the next few years those consoles are still going to be the lowest common denominator. Plus it usually takes 2 to 3 years for a gen to mature by which time I’ll be picking up a 5080 or 4080S for 750. By the time VRAM is an issue you’ll be upgrading to the next generation of GPUs.

God damn this guy is smart.

But didn't you get mesmerised by Jensen's kitchen and leather jacket to part with your cash?

Worth noting according to Scans grid, they have no outstanding PNY orders, yet expect a delivery of stock on between tomorrow and Friday... so if you reeeaally want one ASAP.. that seems to be your best bet.

Personally I think the 3090 is unwise choice, there will be something better in 12-18 months, a 3080 Ti or super for example likely for a similar price to the current 3080 so If I was chasing a few more FPS I would get a 3080 now and use the massive saving to upgrade again in 18 months selling the 3080, its just makes good sense as 9fps isnt a worth this much to me. Actually I would wait just in case AMD pull something out of the bag, you never know. I would be annoyed if I spent stupid money and its not the top performing card on the block a month later !

Hey if money is no object then why not but its performance is a terrible value for the increase in cost we all know this.

RTX 3080 vs RTX 3090 Comparison ( average FPS and percentage gain by RTX 3090 over RTX 3080 )

Control ( 55 vs 63 ) +14.54%
Assassin's Creed Odyssey ( 70 vs 80 ) +14.28%
Microsoft Flight Simulator ( 52 vs 57 ) +9.62%
Battlefield V ( 69 vs 78 ) +13.04%
Red Dead Redemption 2 ( 70 vs 77 ) +10%
Kingdom Come Deliverance ( 62 vs 70 ) +12.9%
Horizon Zero Dawn ( 70 vs 78 ) +11.43%
PUBG ( 114 vs 130 ) +14.04%

Average of 8 Games :-
FPS : RTX 3080 vs RTX 3090 = 70.25 vs 79.125
Dollars per frame per second : RTX 3080 vs RTX 3090 = 9.96 vs 18.96
On average RTX 3090 is 12.63% faster than RTX 3080 but RTX 3080 offers 90.36% more value for your money than RTX 3090.

I think the general rule should be, if you need or want a GPU.. buy a GPU. The smartest time to buy a GPU is sometimes not the most convienant.

For those wanting to play Cyerpunk at maximum fidelity and not a year late.. a 3080 is a sweet choice.

Thats all when and good.
But you could buy a 3080 now, and in 4 years time buy the same equivalent of the 3080, all for the price of a 3090. Not only would you then have what would be a much faster card, you could also sell the 3080. So you've essentially paid the same price for less performance based on your theory

Your point is the same on any card you purchase now. There will always be a faster card arriving and the resale value of your current card will lower. I don't buy a video card thinking what I can sell it for later in life.

For anyone who uses VR the 3090 gives a huge boost over the 3080, averaging 20-30FPS increase. This is the difference between playing on medium vs playing on ultra settings in games, or 100% vs 125% supersampling scaling.

@MarcBSounds First off I dont want to be part of a "bash anyone who bought on of these cards" pile on. And I am open to be convinced I am wrong or even "its my money and I wanted this" as a totally acceptable conclusion but I think you are over simplifying saying "there is always cheaper out later" of course there is but its not a reason to almost double the price for 10% ish improvment, if there had been a 3100 card at £2500 with similar gains up from the 3090 as was from the 3080 to 3090 would you have got that instead ? where does it stop being worth it ? The answer for me is 3080 level /price now and something to replace it sooner rather than later, rather than all that money now for poor value returns.

Hey you 3090 owners have the best card available today and thats pretty sweet, I don't want to take the enjoyment away from anyone. Part of my personal enjoyment is feeling like I made a choice I felt was looking at the value and timing of other products as well, this give me some additional pleasure and strokes my ego (we all have them) and hence I cannot buy the 3090 as it stands and be happy with my choices. Turns out it takes all sorts and we are talking about things that are supposed to make us happy, if it did then mission accomplished and nay says are missing the point of your purchase, if it was to have the best I would have waited just a short while just in case.

Wait, you got a 3080??! Kept that quiet! Next youl be telling us you bought a new rig to go with it!:D

i bought the new rig in bits from March till August second hand for everything bar the psu ssd's and ram £900 all in all

8700k
z370 strix e
32 gigs vengence pro 3200mhz
nzxt kraken x62
corsair mp600 1tb
corsair hx1200i
Phanteks p600s
Samsung 860 qvo 1tb

seeing the rig for £1700 with a 3080 kinda makes me regret having done so.......

I'm still short the 3080.... still leaning towards the evga ftw3 hybrid assuming the price isn't bum twitchingly bad.

Edit: 950 if you include the 6 ml 120 pro rgb fans with commander pro.....

theres another £150 for the h150i pro ive got waiting in a box with a copper ihs waiting for a delidding and some liquid metal going on.

Don't feel too bad. The ebuyer system is a great way to get a 3080, but it's not enthusiast spec at all. I think I specced it at a grand minus the GPU.

I couldn't buy the parts/OS cheaper than the ebuyer price plus all built & 3 year warranty and 3080 Gamer Trio worked out at just £725 based on all other costs.

Did you get a 3080 :smashin: :D 🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕
Technically I have one reserved yeah! Loosing patience mind you. Kinda wondered if there was a quicker way of getting one, like, buying one of those pre built rigs with one?

Seems risky though as nobody has done that yet... :D
