I am trying to set up a speaker system for the first time, a simple 3.0 set to get clear movie dialogue from my TV/receiver/PS3.

However, after trying both HDMI and Optical there seems to be no sound and was wondering if there is a process of elimination one can try? I'm wondering if my receiver is so old that it and my TV is not compatible with modern HDMI and optical cables, hopefully not.

My receiver: Pioneer VSX 421-K
TV: Pioneer Kuro 8th gen
PS3 Slim

Hello, I am not familiar with your actual devices but general rules are:

1. The HDMI port on the AVR that you show in your picture does not say ARC so I presume it is not ARC compatible, that means that HDMI audio out of the TV into the AVR would not be an option.

2. Try optical - ensure that your TV is set to output audio via the optical port.

3. Check the input assign settings on the AVR, ensure that one of the optical inputs is assigned to TV and that the AVR is set to that input when trying to access the audio.
