Pimax 8K/5K+/8KX Chat

After writing last night I couldn’t help myself I had to go back in. I played through Apollo 11 and just wow. With those photo realistic graphics the 5k+ looked soooo good. The sheer size of the rocket looked huge. The clarity of the cockpit switches and the the moon surface. I thought the backs were going to kill this experience but it was never. Problem even on the moon. Bouncing around the moon surface was awesome and I didn’t finish until 2am.

I didn't finish drinking whisky til 2am. I wonder who feels the fuzziest today.

Back on it today.

The VR Youtube app looks very nice. Plenty of 4k material to look at. The 5k+ panels do a great job here the colours are natural and the sharpness is very good. It's getting very very close to 1080p projector standards. The 5k+ lens still have a glare issue but nothing like the Vive fresnel rings. It won't be long before we have movie quality VR. I still prefer aspherical lenses to fresnel given the choice. I spent way longer watching quadcopter footage than ever before. The detail from areal shot is breathtaking. The 8k+ no doubt would be even better.

Checked out some of the SteamVR environments. One of my favourites is the Church yard. Like Youtube it takes advantage of the reduced fresnel rings and near zero SDE. This scene looks amazing, near to being there in person. Another generation and we won't know the difference.

Another interesting environment in the FOV test room. I can say I'm a little disappointed here as I could only get 140FOV on the NORMAL Pitool setting. People have allways said normal was 150FOV. For the same test I only got 100FOV on the Vive where people would get 110. From what I've seen theres 40FOV difference between the 5k+ and Vive. That 40FOV is still a huge boost and removes that claustrophobic feeling you get from first gen headsets.

Have you had a play with the Brainfart yet? Or is that only on the version of PiTool you couldnt get to work?

Brain fart?

Ahh right lol. Thinks its still in beta.

I think Pimax pulled the link because there were too many problems.

Glad things are looking up. I was gutted for you when you were clearly dissapointed on 1st putting on. Huxley are you getting on better with it now?

Not really. Had some friends over last night and played beatsaber, Arizona Sunshine, The Lab and Skyrim. We played first on the Rift and then swapped over to the Pimax. While everybody commented on the visual upgrade of the 5K+, the comfort and eyestrain was off-putting enough for 5 out of 6 people to elect for more Rift. The one person who didn't appear to have that much of a problem with was my friend who took it with him to spend the day with it. Just spoken with him and he estimates he's spent about five hours using it today. And that's enough for him at this point.

I don't see how this is going to improve for me. I have 2.5k hours in steamvr and for some reason the Pimax makes me feel awful. I`m going to mull over my options on the weekend, one way or another its going.

I’ve reading up on other people’s opinions, swe viver seems to have gone silent on pimax?

Such a shame Huxley.

I have to admit I feel ill today but I can’t tell if it’s because my kids have been off school sick recently or because it’s some kind of VR sickness.

Is it due to the angled lenses?
Is it due to the focal distance?
Is it down to the warping?
Is it down to frame rate?
Is it a combination of everything?

DK2 use to give me VR sickness in the early day of the Tuscany demo.

I don’t think I could go back to the Vive now the Pimax gives me too many Wow moments. I certainly wouldn’t contemplate selling it.

I did a few more game tests today.

Now the blacks haven’t been a problem so far but one game that didn’t look as good is Elite Dangerous. Due to its dark nature and reliance on black it made me think more about OLED and how I should of stuck with the 8k. Onward too. Some maps are dark and the 5k+ looks grey.

Now in the early days of VR devs were told to avoid ultimate black due to causing fresnel glare on high contrast scenes but with this headset you want deep blacks. It’s strange because other games the blacks do look black. Apollo 11 looks good.

I think the next VR breakthrough will be Samsung’s curved OLED panels which will solve all VRs shortcomings.

So I assume you have played with the different FOV settings. Out of curiosity what is it like on the minimum setting (150 isn't it?) I ask because that is the rumoured approx FOV of the next rift.. is that a big jump over the vive or now you have experienced 200 degrees would you say you would not be satisfied with such a small jump?

Good questions Mike. The Pimax FOV was meant to be

170 Large
150 Normal
120 Small

But my experience is 150 is actually 140. I’ve not tested 120 yet. I will later.

I haven’t seen any evidence that Valve or Oculus are going for 140FOV with their headsets but if Valve announce a 140FOV HMD with OLEDs pure blacks and no warping I would buy it. Even the Vive Cosmos looks 100FOV.

Before anyone buys the Pimax I would say try one first. It might not be for you. Just don’t try Apollo 11 it will be insta buy it looks that good lol

True the rumours I speak of could well be my wishfully thinking combined with that half Dome prototype which may never come to be. Still thanks for the reply and sorry to derail it is just from what I have read about the pimax, it is interesting but I do not think it is for me. I am glad it is growing on you hsvever and look forward to trying one

Ok more tests in the FOV environment.

Claimed FOV - My Actual FOV

Large 170 160
Normal 150 140
Small 120 120

Just read the new version should be here by 18th Feb.

Regarding sickness and stuff.. the first time I used my rift I was I'll for a full 24 hours. I've never been like that since until I tried a rollercoaster SIM in conjunction with my seat mover. 2 minutes and I was done.

When I got my Odyssey+ I was struggling with blurred vision for a good 30 mins after using it. Thankfully that went after a week too.

The moral of the story... Hopefully you'll get use to the new headset with time

Not been on VR today and still feel sick so it can’t be the VR.

Sounds like Huxley is going to sell so you can get in there Tiger Feet. Do you have a Vive or spare base stations?

With Knuckles imminent it’s a bad time to shell out for wands.

Can you watch movies on this mate @Atmos if so is it 4K or 1080p ?
What can you connect , external hard drive etc ?
Cheers

Erm. Asking for a friend. Have you tried VR Porn yet? I would imagine that the bigger FOV would be a disadvantage because moving your head would mean you'd see the sides of the 180 video a bit too easily?

I think you should try it and report back. For SCIENCE. :D
