Can someone define the difference between Premium HDR and (regular?) HDR?

Looking at getting a TV and given the £600 difference between the below two TVs @ JohnLewis - I'd like to know the reason. I can't imagine that 3D is the reason for that cost - so am assuming its the 'Premium' HDR - but that sounds a smidge like a gimmick or accounting for a very minor difference.

Sony Bravia 55XD9305 LED Premium HDR 4K Ultra HD 3D Android TV, 55"
Sony Bravia 55XD8005 LED HDR 4K Ultra HD Android TV, 55"

Any help?

To get premium HDR you need a panel that will go to a 1000 nits ....

There is technically no such things as premium HDR. HDR is simply a higher dynamic range application and main difference is static vs dynamic metadata.

The confusion comes from manufacturer trying to define an optimum ultra hd aka 4K experience with HDR. They self proclaimed it ultra hd premium. Like Paul young stated, it is a collection of minimum requirement so consumer are not abused (in theory). These are like 10 bits panel, 1000 nits, wider color gamut, 4K and HDR. Sony refused to join!!!. Do some reading if interested as simple google search will do

Now, HDR is about control of each pixel in the case of oled and zones (fald) for led versus edge led (light on the sides) for led. The two TV you mentioned, the xd93 has a control by zone (full array local dimming aka fald) versus the other TV which is edge led (lights from the sides). That simply means that the xd93 HDR is better hence the premium marketing tag.

Oled is the ultimate way for HDR because you control 8 millions plus pixel one by one...like with plasma. however oled struggle to reach 1000 nits. HDR is like an engine in a car, doesn't matter if you have a v6 if your suspension and transmission is rubbish...same applies to TVs as you need all the rest to be as good.hope it helps a bit

Actually Sony were one of the founding members of the UHD alliance which is the body issuing the UHD Premium badge. Sony have chosen not to use that badging on their televisions though.

As others have said. The XD93 provides better HDR as it has a higher brightness range and can brighten and dim different sections of the screen simultaneously.

Something like a torch in a dark cave will have much brighter fire on the XD93 while retaining the same darkness of cave when compared to the XD80.

After viewing HDR on several different screens, I've come to the conclusion that HDR without a dimming system in the TV is a waste of time. Such TVs don't extend the range at all, they just brighten the whole picture, meaning blacks are no longer black and you end up with fluctuating brightness issues.

Unless you are in a hurry or deal of the year, suggest you wait past ces in Jan as new TVs coming with potentially much better HDR capability.
If you must, xd93 or ks7000 / ks8000 are your best bet now.
