Hi,

Been a while since I’ve posted here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I bought a Q Acoustics 7000i speaker bundle back in 2016. I sat down tonight to watch a film and noticed that the sub isn’t outputting any bass. It’s making a weird noise from the back too (almost a whirring/high pitched noise). I plugged it up to another AV receiver here and there was still no response. It powers up fine just doesn’t produce any sound. Any ideas what it could be?

If it’s faulty, does anyone know what Q Acoustics are like for out of warranty repairs? (I’m assuming I’ll have to pay) Am I better off buying a new sub at this point or getting it repaired?

I’m a bit disappointed that it’s gone after just under 4 years to be honest. I’ve had systems last a lot longer and expected better from Q Acoustics really. Thanks for any help you can give.

There has been some problems with the QA subwoofer amps. Send them email and describe the issue and ask is there something you could still try, if not then ask how much it would cost to repair/swap new parts.

Select enquiry type Service & Spares and then fill the rest. They usually respond quite fast.

When you get reply back share it with us!

Thank you. Have sent them an email just now.

Should I replace it, do you think it’s best to not replace it with another Q Acoustics subwoofer then (based on you mentioning them having issues)? I thought about replacing it with the 3070s as my sub has been replaced by it in the speaker bundles it seems. I figured it would be a good match for my speakers that way. Not sure whether to buy a different brand, just worried about buying something that won’t match very well.

I meant if it´s amp failure like the 2070s and some 3070s had, then they just send you new one and it´s easy to swap it. That is assuming it won´t cost too much. There is no single reason why you would need the sub from QA so you are free to choose. In UK BK Electronics gives you best bang for buck products under 500£. It certainly won´t hurt to buy something bit larger as few members have done with the 7000i`s making the whole system sound even better. And i mean the P12-300SB sized.

Have a look on here: Sub Woofers - Sub Bass - Subwoofer

I see now. I thought they may have been well known for faults but I misunderstood. Sorry. Hopefully it will be something like you suggested however and I’ll be able to repair it.

That BK does look fantastic. I’m fairly tempted to replace my sub altogether now. Depends on what Q Acoustics get back to me with though I guess.

Q Acoustics have got back to me. They’ve informed me that as it’s a discontinued product, parts are limited (it’s less than four years old?!) and they would need £55 upfront to look at it (not including the cost of me sending it to them as I live too far away from the repair centre). If, when they have looked at it, they don’t have the parts then the £55 is non-refundable and the unit will be returned. If they have the parts, it will be deducted from the total cost.

Not happy about that at all to be honest. I could send it them and they won’t be able to repair so it’ll be up to £80 wasted after factoring in courier costs. I expected better from a big name to be honest. This shouldn’t have died in just under 4 years. Think I’ll avoid Q Acoustics in future.

Yes this is typical from speaker company. Good example why one should look in to specialized manufacturers (BKE, SVS, Arendal etc.). You actually got little more than some people that i remember with QA subs. Sadly with cheap electronics you never know.. You could contact the big buys at QA and ask will they come forward giving you their new model for lower price, which some companies do, but i have a feeling you want to look elsewhere now. BK has 2year amp warranty, but i have seen some very old ones fixed way under 100£ and they much better service/support if anything were to happen. SVS has 5year warranty on amps, products start at 500£ mark.

I’m definitely tempted to buy a BK, that is for sure.

The repair company has passed it back to QA and they’ve just informed me that actually, the sub isn’t serviceable at all. They’ve said the factory that built these has since been closed and the only way to get into the unit is to break the sub itself. They’re looking into what they can do to rectify it.

Have to give them props at their speedy replies. They have been quicker than any manufacturer I have dealt with. Just hope they can offer a suitable solution. If not, BK here I come. Ha.

QA got back to me offering me a new 7060s subwoofer for £191.92 plus VAT. Not sure whether to take that or just buy a BK instead.

I’ve also seen the BK Gemini 2. I’ve been thinking that the P12 may be too powerful for the room it is going in (room is 4m by 3m) and thought that may be more suitable. Are my concerns unfounded in that regard do you think and I should just go for the P12?

Richer Sounds said they would get back to me with options they could offer but haven’t heard anything yet. Hopefully will hear tomorrow.

Ah, forget the QA then. You can get black new grade-b Gemini II for 222£ shipped from BK´s ebay site. So if it would come down to those two then BK without doubt.

It´s tough to get idea what would be enough for others, but for me personally Gem II was too polite even in small room for action/scifi type movies. P12/XXLS400 being too large for such room, i don´t think so as they are sealed by design and you are still in control of the gain knob. But it comes down to expectations, use and requirements. Some crave more impact and some are fine with just some light low end to add bit more weight. We have members here with dual 15" sealed subwoofers even in slightly smaller rooms, although they are dedicated man caves. If you got the space and you want more impact with a deeper bass response then why not. I think some other member bought P12 or XXLS400 while ago with those speakers you own and he was very happy.

There is one other option too which is popular in small rooms where the space is issue. It`s basically same sized as Gemini II, but with almost double the power and better driver. Priced 300£ on the BKs ebay site. Model XLS200.

As there isn´t any satin black P12 in the site i`m going to link for you, it would make more sense to pick XXLS400 for 399£ than P12-300SB from the main site for same price! But the decision is fully yours depending what you are looking for.

These are new grade-b in mint condition with full warranty. If you find the model you fancy in correct finish and driver orientation, you will save ~40-50£.

I definitely agree with @Gasp3621!!
I had the same 7000i set with the 7070si sub, I replaced the Q sub with a Gemini II as I wasn't overly happy with it, that was an improvement, but not huge. I then swapped that for an XLS200 and that was a definite step up from the Q7070si and was fine in my 4.1m x 4.2m room, but I got upgraditis and now have 2 XXLS400's!
If you're looking at the BK range I would bypass the Gemini II and look at the XLS200 upwards, I wish I had listened to that advice when I got the Gemini II, could have saved money and time by going for a better sub initially!!

Put that £80 towards a unit for a specialist firm and you'll bit go far wrong with a BK.

Thank you all so much for the help. I really appreciate it.

I’ve been weighing up my options tonight (and had the measuring tape out) and it seems like a P12/XLS400 would be too big for where I wanted to place it. (I’ve been “warned“ not to go too powerful too by "the boss". )

The Gemini looked good for my needs (as it seemed quite similar in power to the old QA sub), but I settled on the XLS200 instead. Based on what has been said and the specs listed by BK, it seems it will be a nice upgrade rather than more of the same so to speak. I managed to get a down-firing cherry wood sub from their eBay store for just over £300 so a nice £50 saving (after delivery) compared to buying new from their website.

Thanks again everyone. I was waiting on Richer Sounds to respond, but they never got back to me with the options they said they had. I figured I wouldn’t be given anything close to what the XLS200 could provide me at that price point though so just went for it. Can’t wait for my new toy to arrive now. :D

Subwoofers have volume (gain) controls so the only way that a sub can be 'too powerful' is that you've wasted money on headroom you don't need. None of the subs mentioned in this thread seem at all excessive in this regard anyway.

I know, but when the boss sees it’s bigger in size and has more wattage, she’s not as easy to convince.

I knew I couldn’t go for the bigger P12/XLS400 due to the size difference mainly. That was what pushed me to go for the XLS200 (and the comments here saying to go for that over a Gemini). :)

I'm new to 'proper' subs and needed a new one to replace an old Jamo. I got the BK Double Gem as it's a small footprint.
Very happy with it and would recommend one. My 'boss' isn't too bothered by the size.

Got my BK today. Should I use the high level input with my Sony STR-1080 or just stick with the low level input?

Low level connection: R (Mono)!

- Low Level Gain to ~10- 11 clock position
- Filter OUT LFE
- Phase 0
- Frequency knob max 120hz

Thanks. That’s what I thought.

Have an issue however. The receiver isn’t picking up that the sub exists. I have a feeling it’s broke along with my old sub.:(

*Edit* Never mind. The auto cal was glitching. First there was no sub and then no surround speakers. I played with the levels manually then tried again and it’s worked.

Holy crap. Just holy crap. Why did I not buy one of these subs before?! I’m testing Godzilla King of the Monsters 4K with it and I’m literally feeling every single footstep of Godzilla walking into Boston. My god is this amazing.

Thank you all so much for recommending me this.:D

It's a nice step up from the Q sub!! Enjoy :)

i would not recommend the 3070..its not that deep. i have the 2070, bought the 3070 because i was happy with the 2070 and was hoping to.upgrade.

i.sold the 3070 and still have the 2070.. the 2070 has better build quality, more features and, the woofers have thicker surrounds and appear move more air as they have more excursion. i.fond the 2070 as deep if not deeper and.more.powerful.

im currently using my 2070 in my main system.. put my rel, whichh is an upgrade on the bk xls 200 mk2, in storage,
