Microsoft and Sony collaborating on "cloud-based solutions for gaming experiences and content-streaming"

Microsoft and Sony have announced a new partnership that will see the two companies working together to create "new innovations to enhance customer experiences", with a particular focus on gaming and content-streaming.

Part of the deal will see Sony exploring the use of Microsoft's existing cloud computing platform, Azure, for its game and content-streaming services, and the companies will also investigate joint development of future cloud solutions to benefit both parties in the same areas.

The ultimate goal, according the official press announcement, is to "deliver more enhanced entertainment experiences" for customers around the world, and to build "better development platforms for the content creator community".

Microsoft and Sony have also pledged to collaborate on development projects focussing on semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

"Our mission is to seamlessly evolve [PlayStation] as [a platform] that continues to deliver the best and most immersive entertainment experiences, together with a cloud environment that ensures the best possible experience, anytime, anywhere", said Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony president and CEO, of the agreement.

"For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content. "

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella offered his own thoughts, saying, "Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation...Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers."

This is good business for MS. Previous generations have been a complete reset, old games and peripherals don't work and you start form scratch buying new games. This seems to have changed now with MS developing BC for a lot of its games and has said that they'll be supported going forwards and with rumours stating that the PS5 will also have backwards compatibility.

This generation we've been increasingly tied in to an ecosystem. If you don't have the time to put into all the consoles then you've had to pick one. I now have a ton of digital content on my Xbox account that I don't want to loose going forwards. I daresay there are a lot of PlayStation owners in the same position. As Sony outsold MS 2:1 this generation MS doing a deal with Sony for use of their cloud infrastructure makes perfect sense.

Whatever happens with the next gen hardware MS makes money. If the next Xbox is a roaring success great. If Sony take most of their current owners/subscribers forwards into the next generation great, they'll make money off the PlayStation owners by charging for their cloud infrastructure. Win win for MS.

It's also good for Sony as they have access to the best cloud for gaming. MS have their own interests in making their cloud a good gaming platform and Sony will benefit from that. Although the Amazon cloud is bigger, MS have more data centres around the world which you need to deliver a low latency service in more territories.

Fanboys of both sides may kick off about this, but personally I only see it as a good thing for console gamers generally.

While I think the Google offering sounds good on paper. I think the reality is going to be different from what they are actually able to offer most people. 8K streaming.......erm good luck with that.

I think this is good news regardless. I hope more comes from it other than just streaming.

I suspect Sony will be using Microsoft Azure network for PS NOW from now on.

Microsoft this gen have decided you dont necessarily have to buy an xbox they just want their services or products to be used. They will me getting a healthy amount of cash from Sony for use of the Azure network
