I've also been thinking about the beginning when
Luke tosses the lightsaber over his shoulder
. Metaphor for what Jonshon was doing to Abrams' story from TFA?

That seemed to me like a blatant nod to ROTJ

Luke tossed his lightsabre away after fighting Vader in Jedi

Only it was ace in ROTJ, because tonally and visually it matched the epic nature of the scene.
It wasn’t played like a blooper scene. I have no issue with him chucking the the sabre, just the stupid looney tunes way he did it in.

I think the message was that he didn’t feel that a lightsabre was necessary but I agree that it was very casually tossed away.[\SPOILER]

I dont have too much of an issue with the
saber toss personally
, but you're dead right there.

It’s just missing a zany sound effect. I get why RJ did it, it was the last thing you were expecting, it’s a good move, he just completely misjudged the tone of the scene though, like so many in TLJ.

Get some spoiler tags in there please guys, some people may not have seen it yet and this is the spoiler free thread...

I must admit I was cracking up watching the 2 Porgs examining the light sabre as Ray goes to get it.

Out of curiosity, why do we have 2 separate threads when we use spoiler tags anyway? Surely we only need 1, or we don't need tags in both?

Don't ask me, I didn't create them

I think it's just courtesy to spoiler anyway just in case someone wanders into the wrong thread. The rules are you should spoiler all spoilers no matter how old the film.

That Rian Johnson sure showed Denis Villeneuve how to make a successful film.

Digby ?

For me Disney have turned the franchise into a toy fest, they have shoe horned things in with their eye in merchandising, the introduction of the Asian girl for that market, whether a certain character survives seems to be based on what kids will buy. When Lucas wrote it, ultimately it was to tell a story the merchandise cane second, yes it made him very rich but Disney will make a fortune off the films alone, the surely can tell a great story and flesh out great characters. Instead they create another droid for people to buy or a space horse.

A "toy fest" describes SW to a tee. From the OT to today.

As for the "Asian girl" being introduced for that market, for decades studios have cast white actors in blockbusters for markets with predominantly white people. So what if they're responding to what's happening in Asia (or more specifically China).

I thought she was very good In it and had a great chemistry with Finn. Their story wasn’t too great and a bit pointless but she was good.

Totally agree re regional actors. Far more female characters this time round too.

watched it again last night - and was even better on the 2nd viewing.

very very solid 9++ from me!

a lot of things make more sense on a 2nd watching - i was still blown away by:

- space battles!!!
- Lightspeed spaceship blast - wow
- on 2nd viewing you pick up more on Luke's powers when he confronts Rey back at the village and they have their little fight. Once he re-engages with the force (or tunes himself back into it)
- Rey in the dark chamber mirror reflections - seeing the 2 people walking towards the mirror, to be replaced by herself - are they the 'over-viewers of the universe?'
- Snoke audience chamber and subsequent fight
- i may be in the minority but i liked the Casino planet - was different take and the racing herd is not nearly as bad as the haters are complaining about.

For me - the Last Jedi story is about the light getting brighter (in Rey) and the dark getting darker (in Ren).

I was disappointed about Phasma she was completely underwhelming -

I'm off for a 3rd viewing at the weekend :)
