The Last Jedi stands head and shoulders over the other two. I totally 'get' the dislike. I empathise, and share in some of it. But it's got so much going for it and is bursting at the seams with ideas.
Given what we now know about Kylo Ren's original arc, The Last Jedi almost seems the truest to his character, jettisoning all pretence of being a good guy by the end (Driver says something similar in that interview). Which also throws (a little) cold water on the idea that there wasn't a rough overall arc in place.

Problem is, they seemed to get swayed by all the Reylo stuff on the Internet and radically change course, which is always a terrible idea. Still, I think they've finally learned that the hard way.

I really liked what they did with Luke because it was where no one wanted to go with him. Most wanted him to come back as the Luke of old to save the galaxy and it was refreshing they didn't. Some of the visuals are stunning as well, like the battle on Crait.

Canto Bight on the other hand was a massive misstep.
I'm one of the few who doesn't mind the Canto Bight scenes. True, ultimately they don't affect the outcome, other than to introduce Broom boy. However it's one of the few times in the sequel trilogy we get to see a developed planet, and it's a lively, harmless detour.

My main issue with those scenes is the logistics:
if Finn and Rose can simply flit off to a casino world during an exodus, why can't others?

I still haven't caught up with the Adam Driver revelations but I agree TROS seemed to chicken out of what TLJ set up. We really didn't need The Emperor (except perhaps as some kind of dark-side vision- always good to see McDiarmid). With Snoke gone, the opportunity was there for Kylo Ren to really come into his own and become the true ultimate bad. Rather like how Walter White levelled up after killing Gus Fring. He could perhaps even have turned Rey briefly to the Dark Side- an opportunity for Finn perhaps to bring her back to the light.

Oh absolutely - there's a lot about that and the later scenes when they return and you think - "hang on a second..?".

One of the things I'd have really like to have seen in the film, and I thought we were getting it, was:
Finn getting killed when he was going to sacrifice himself during the battle on Crait. That would have taken Star Wars to another level for me, to have someone make that ultimate sacrifice. That would have been a gut punch to lose such an integral character at the time, Also, they should have just killed off Leia at the hands of her son, and that would really have taken Kylo beyond the point of redemption into the big baddie. It would also have saved us the Leia Poppins scene.

Anyway I realise this is an Ep9 thread, so apologies for going OT
