Hi,

I live in a rented flat in London. I have a Triplexer faceplate providing tv, fm-dab, and satellite. 3 days ago all the freeview HD disappeared. Retuning didn’t restore them, all cables and tv are working and in good order. Speaking to the landlord they have contacted the Property Management service (PMS)to get them to check the communal IRS feed/splitters. The PMS claim nothing is wrong with the communally provided signal.

I removed the faceplate to see if the cable was loose. It was not. I removed the cable from the faceplate and voila.... HD signals reappeared on the TV (I had the last known on the screen). I don’t understand (and I apologise for my ignorance here) but

1) why am I getting (good/medium signal strength) over the air when the main coaxial cable providing the signal isn’t plugged into the faceplate. It’s just hanging next to it but not touching. When I plug it back into the faceplate/Triplexer all signal disappears?
2) having bought a new faceplate/Triplexer and reconnected I get the same lack of HD channels. So I know it’s not the faceplate. Unplugging the coaxial cable and just holding it near I get good/medium signal strength (high quality). Could this mean that there is a cable break within the walls?

Just trying to understand before I have to take time off work to allow half of london to traipse in looking on behalf of my landlord.

Thank you

Overload. Too high a signal level. Sadly all too common in communal aerial systems where the installers don't visit every outlet to check the levels.

A simple attenuator will probably fix but really the communal system needs 'fettling' (a specialised technical term) to set the level at all the outlets to the optimum 45 to 65 dB (ref 1 microVolt).

A recent change to the frequency used for the HD channels you have lost could be due to a filter designed to avoid co-channel reception that the communal aerial can receive now being notched out.

Not "3 days ago", though.
CP frequency change was almost 12 months ago.
