anyone else having the same issue

when doing a clean install I can format the hard drive but it wont let me partition it

when I press next it tells me to check log files and then stops install

Iso image on usb stick has been used loads of times with no issue

so in this instance I just rebooted and used a win 7 iso on usb and works fine

hard drive checks out using usual tools

is the win 10 install experience not perfect ?

only when using the standard windows method

not trying to do anything fancy

Are you cleaning the existing partitions off the disk when doing your clean install?

This can be achieved during the install at the 'Where do you want to install Windows' screen, using 'Drive Options (Advanced)' to delete all partitions. Then install to Unallocated Space to ensure the System Reserved partition is created on the Installation Drive.

Again I'd just leave the drive as one partition. As splitting it into two or more partitions is pointless IMO. Some people still believe that splitting the drive to have a windows installation partition and a separate Data partition is best, as they can then reformat or reinstall windows without losing their data. But you should be backing up to external media for that purpose anyway.

Oh and are you using the latest Windows 10 iso on your USB key?

hi

yes always have cleaned the old partitions off drive and just installed using windows default of one partition

funny thing is same usb stick with win 10 ver 1511 does seem to work sometimes

perhaps I have some faulty drives ?

but why would they install windows 7 with no issues following same procedure

Picture shows a drive already partitioned, 1 big partiton for the whole disk.

So yes you can format the partition to erase any data on it OR choose delete to remove the partition from the disk entirely, leaving it unallocated.

Then you are free to define a fresh partition to a size of your choosing. If you choose less than the disks full capacity you are then also free to create second partition etc.

But when I press next I get the error and won't go any further

strangely its now sorted

changed boot order in bios to ssd hard drive and that's it

used f7 to do boot menu

booted from usb stick

and hey presto worked a dream

never had to to it this way before

seems to be a win 10 BUG

cause win 7 and 8 both install setting

damm this has come back to bite me again

complete new install

says It find an existing partion or create one

although I clearly can delete and create partions

set the bios for hard drive as first boot

and then boot menu on start up to usb stick
